He was raised as a country boy and attended country school through grade 8, completing his schooling and graduating in 1934 from Pershing High School in Plummer. He worked and traveled in various parts of the United States until his marriage to Margaret Jaeger on November 8, 1941. He entered the Army Corp of Engineers and served his country during World War II. After the war, the couple began raising their family. They sought work in various states with Howard utilizing his mechanical skills, in particular with heavy equipment, where he picked up his new middle name, Caterpillar. He settled in Plummer, living out his retirement years in unselfish service to his family and his community. Howard was much loved and admired by his family and his friends. He and Margaret were married 64 years.
Howard always tried to serve God and his fellow man. He always shared whatever he had, giving generously of his time and his money to anyone who needed him. Howard was honored as an Outstanding Senior Citizen in Red Lake County, and Howard and Margaret received the Knights of Columbus Family of the Year Award in 2005. He had a special need to help feed and care for disadvantaged children, and recently has sponsored a child through Children International.
