Iona Aamodt, 86, of Thief River Falls, MN, passed away on Friday, May 13, 2022 at Thief River Care Center, Thief River Falls, MN.

Iona was born on February 6, 1936 in Greenbush, MN to Nels and Louise (Ladwig) Aamodt.  She is the youngest of two children.  In 1943, the family moved to Thief River Falls where Iona lived with her parents.  In 1977 at age 41, she moved to Fergus Falls State Hospital, when her parents were no longer able to care for her.   In 1988, at age 52 Iona moved back to Thief River Falls and she lived at Johnson's Riverside and attended the Falls DAC for over 30 years.   In 2019, at age 83, she moved into the Thief River Falls Care Center.

Iona loved working with tools, sanding wood crafts, and she would spend hours unwinding copper wires from motors.  She enjoyed working on labeling and sealing Digi-Key packages and would label newsletters for various service organizations in TRF.   She enjoyed the senior exercise program, music, arts and crafts, board and card games and she loved to go out for ice cream.

Iona was a social person and enjoyed one-on-one attention from others.   She was able to communicate through gestures, vocalizations, or pointing at what she wanted.  Iona would let you know if she didn't like something by stomping her feet or clapping her hands.  She enjoyed carrying stuffed animals or dolls and cradling them in her arms.  Iona enjoyed looking at and paging through magazines. One memorable trait of Iona's was when she would take the hands of her caregivers and placed them on her shoulders or back for them to rub.

Iona is survived by her sister, Delores Laliberte, Thief River Falls.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Nels and Louise Aamodt.

Funeral Service will be 10 AM Monday, May 23, 2022, at the Care Center Chapel, Thief River Falls, MN.

Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery, Thief River Falls, MN.
