Irene Schultz, age 89 of Red Lake Falls, MN died on Monday, April 27, at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND. Funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM on Friday, May 1, 2015 at St. John Lutheran Church, Red Lake Falls, MN with Rev. John Bungardner officiating. Burial will be held at Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery, rural Hillsboro, MO on Monday, May 4, 2015 at 11:00 AM. Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Thursday, April 30, 2015 at Johnson Funeral Service in Red Lake Falls, MN. Visitation will also be held from 9:30 AM until 10:30 AM on Friday at St. John Lutheran Church. Irene Alice Mundt was born on February 2, 1926, the daughter of August F. and Gertrude M. (Babst) Mundt near Molson, WA. She graduated from Oroville High School in 1943 and Seattle College and Providence School of Nursing in 1947. She was the first of her family to graduate from college. Irene married Herbert J. Steinbach on June 20, 1947 and moved to his home in rural Hillsboro, MO. She worked in different areas of nursing for 30 years. She was instrumental in starting the Ponybird facility for the developmentally disabled in Mapaville, MO. Irene was the director of nurses at the Jefferson Memorial Hospital in Crystal City, MO. She then worked as a nurse for Jefferson County. After her granddaughter, Krista was born, Irene started a daycare in her home which she had for about ten years. Herbert died March of 1986. She married Arley D. Schultz on October 19, 1991 and moved to his dairy farm near Red Lake Falls, MN. The couple enjoyed traveling back to Missouri every six months to visit family and traveled throughout the western United States and Alaska visiting relatives and friends along the way. They also enjoyed a trip to visit Denmark, Norway & Sweden. Irene was a member of St. John Lutheran Church and Ladies Aid. Church was a very important part of her life. She also loved quilting and made several quilts for Relay For Life, her grandchildren and various other people and organizations. When Irene wasn't quilting, she was helping on the farm. She is survived by her husband, Arley of Red Lake Falls, MN; son, Roger (Virginia) Steinbach of Mesa, AZ; daughters, Karen Thomeczek of Hillsboro, MO, and Donna Steinbach of Fredricktown, MO; stepson, Lyndon (Lori) Schultz of Red Lake Falls, MN; stepdaughter, Loreen Schultz of Moorhead, MN; 5 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, 6 step grandchildren, and 2 step great-grandchildren; sisters, Mary Pugh of Richmond, CA; and several cousins, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. She is preceded in death by her first husband, Herbert; parents; brothers, Joseph Mundt and Ernest Mundt; and sisters, Doris Ferguson and Maurine Steinbach.
