Jacob Jake Barnick, 90, died at his home residence in Thief River Falls, MN, with his wife and family present on August 24th, 2006, on his 58th wedding anniversary.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 A.M. on Tuesday, August 29, 2006 at St. Bernards Catholic Church in Thief River Falls, MN with Father Tim McGee presiding. Burial will be in Spring Park Cemetery, Sandstone, MN.
Visitation will be from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. on Monday, August 28, 2006 at St. Bernards Catholic Church with a 7:00 P.M. Prayer Service on Monday evening and also at the church for one hour prior to services on Tuesday.
Jake was born on July 19, 1916 near Sandstone, Minnesota to William and Elise (Splinter) Barnick. As a young man he was a noted auctioneer and a World War II army veteran. After his military service, he married Anne C. Muehlbauer of Sandstone on August 28, 1948. He owned and operated several furniture stores in eastern Minnesota, before moving to Thief River Falls. In 1956 Jake built Barnicks Highway Furniture Mart and remained in business until 1976. He was instrumental in developing the shopping center area now occupied by Wal-Mart, and was a member of the Eagles, American Legion, VFW, Elks and Chamber of Commerce.
Jake is survived by his wife, Anne; three daughters: Joan Baker of Thief River Falls, MN, Susan (Joseph) Mesch of Sierra Vista, AZ and Jackie of San Francisco, CA; three sons: Jim of San Diego, CA, Mark and Robert of Dallas, TX; four grandchildren: Lynn (Michell-fiance) Baker of St. Hilaire, MN, Elisa, Kara, and Anya Mesch of Arizona; two great grandsons; and one brother, Mike of Duluth, MN.
Jake was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers: William and Barney.
