James Payment of Mentor, MN, died on Saturday, December 7, 2013, on arrival at Riverview Hospital in Crookston, MN. Mass of Christian burial will be held on Thursday, December 12, 2013 at 10:00 AM at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Mentor, MN with Father Joseph Richards Officiating. Burial will be held at St. Lawrence Catholic Cemetery at Mentor. Visitation will be held on Thursday one hour prior to services at the church. James Robert Payment was born on January 31, 1936 in Red Lake Falls, MN son of the late Ozais Jr. and Doria (Fournier) Payment. He was baptized at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Terrebonne. He grew up on the family farm. At the age of 18 on October 19, 1954 he was united in marriage to Bertha Mae Gustafson at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Terrebonne. He served in the United States Airforce and was stationed in Hawaii. He lived in Oklahoma, Minnesota, Iowa and then settled in South Milwaukee, WI after he was honorably discharged from the service. He worked for the railroad, Maytag, and for 26 years at the Bucyrus Erie Company in South Milwaukee, WI. He was a member of the United Steel Workers local 1343. He retired and moved back to Mentor in 1988. Jim enjoyed crafts, gardening and spending time in the garage tinkering. He is survived by his 2 daughters Debby Skorupski of Mentor, MN and Marilyn (Luther) Halstensgard of Fertile, MN, one sister Josephine Groom of Zachary, LA and one brother Sheldon (Gloria) Payment of South Milwaukee, WI: 9 grandchildren Ann Skorupski of Cudahy, WI, Tony Skorupski of Cudahy, WI, Trisha (Len) Fuller of Crookston, MN, Ashley Cherf of Ogema, MN, Elizabeth Halstensgard of Fertile, MN, Amanda Korpi of Duluth, MN and Christine Halstensgard of Duluth, MN, Kevin (Carrie) Cherf of Winger, MN, Mandy (Dave) Fritch of Mentor, MN: twelve great-grandchildren; along with many nieces and nephews. Jim is preceded in death by his parents, wife Bertha, daughter Kathy Cherf, brother Xavier Payment, sister-in-law Etta Payment; sons-in-law Mike Skorupski and Leonard Cherf, grandson James Duane Halstensgard; brother-in-law Laurel Groom; father-in-law Milford Gustafson and father-in-law Leland Saga; mother-in-law Valora Saga.
