Joan passed peacefully on to her eternal home with her Savior Jesus Christ on Friday, December 4, 2020 at the age of 69 while at home with loved ones near her side after a short but courageous battle with cancer.
Private family Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Brooks, MN with Father Bob Schreiner officiating. Interment will be at St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery in Brooks, MN.
Joan Beth (Laniel) Carpenter was born on October 2, 1951 in Crookston, MN the daughter of George "Ralph" and Pearl (Fontaine) Laniel. She was baptized and confirmed into the Catholic Faith at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Brooks, MN. She attended Brooks Elementary and Plummer High School graduating with the class of 1969.
Joan spent her first year after graduation employed by Bucyrus-Erie Company of South Milwaukee, WI in the data processing group.
On August 1, 1970 she was united in Holy Matrimony to Gary Jo Carpenter at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Brooks, MN. Together they made their home in Plummer, MN and were members of St. Vincent De Paul parish. Their union was blessed with two sons and two daughters: Sean, Tracy, Grant, and Tanya.
Both Joan and Gary were employed at Artic Cat in Thief River Falls, MN during the 1970's where Joan continued working in data processing. Joan became a successful "Powder Puff" snowmobile racer in addition to being a homemaker, having a full-time job, and enjoying family camping and fishing trips.
In 1978, Gary, Joan and family moved to Jamestown, ND to pursue new opportunities, adventures, and employment. Joan was employed by Coca-Cola Bottling Company doing data processing and Gary was employed by an aerospace firm. They were members of St. James Basilica. They eventually emptied the nest after a 25 year stay in Jamestown.
In 2001, they moved to their Lake Minnie home near lake George, MN where they have resided until the present, and where many family memories were made. Joan enjoyed spending time with her family, gardening, fishing, and was one of the best cooks ever. Joan could make a great meal out of almost anything!
Joan and Gary were fortunate to tour Rome, Italy where they attended a mass by Pope John Paul II at St. Peters Cathedral and visited other Christian historical sites including the Sistine Chapel and the Vatican. As snowbirds, Joan and Gary wintered in Casa Grande, AZ and San Benito, TX.
Joan will be lovingly remembered by her husband Gary of 50 years and by their four children: Sean (Kimberly) Carpenter of Jamestown, ND, Tracy (Todd) Breidenbach of Sabin, MN, Grant (Ginny) Carpenter of Fargo, ND, and Tanya (Jason) Haakenson of Kindred, ND. Nine grandchildren: Hunter (Alyssa) Carpenter, Brittney Carpenter, Riley Strendin, Lindsey Strendin, Jayden (Amber) Haakenson, Jocelyn, Jordan, Jemma, and Jake Haakenson. One great-granddaughter, Millie Carpenter. Three step-grandchildren: Landon Mickelson, Taylor (Dylan) Anthony, and Jayce Breidenbach. Two step-great-grandchildren: Mia and Jaxon Burnside. Five sisters: Ruth Carriere, Dolores Grimm, Alice (Arnie) Cekalla, Lora (Charlie) Johnson, and Janel (Roger) Walter. Two brothers: Mike (Diane) Laniel and Jim (Barb) Laniel. Mother-in-law Jean Carpenter, many brothers and sister's in-law, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Joan is preceded in death by her parents George (Ralph) and Pearl Laniel. Great-grandson infant Phoenix Haakenson. Sisters: Judy Ophus and Ann Peterson. Brothers: Paul Laniel, John Laniel, and infant Joseph Laniel. Nieces: Julie Carriere Hawkinson, Joey Johnson, and infant Jodie Johnson. Nephews: Jack Kelley and Danny Hovet. Father-in-law Eugene Carpenter. Brothers-in-law: Linus Carriere, Darryl Grimm, Danny Carpenter, Bob Hince, and Ron Peterson.
Joan will be truly missed and forever in our hearts.
