Obituary

Joanne Gladden, a beloved wife, mother, stepmother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and cherished member of her community, passed away peacefully on June 8, 2026, at her lake home near Mentor, Minnesota. Born on February 17, 1948, in West Liberty, Iowa, Joanne’s life was a testament to dedication, love, and an unyielding spirit.

A proud graduate of West Liberty High School’s class of 1966, Joanne furthered her education at Muscatine Community College in Muscatine, Iowa. Her professional journey began humbly, working on the production line at Procter & Gamble in Iowa City. Through her detail-oriented nature and competitive drive, she rose through the ranks to become Production Manager—an achievement that reflected not only her work ethic but her remarkable leadership.

Joanne was known for her positive outlook, always radiating warmth and kindness to those around her. Her love for family and friends was unparalleled, and her affectionate nature shone brightest during gatherings, especially when she was clad in her favorite color, purple—a color that symbolized both her vibrancy and grace. She delighted in golfing, where her competitive spirit came alive, and she cherished every moment spent outdoors with loved ones.

In her personal life, Joanne was first married to John Nath in 1968, with whom she welcomed two children, Jennifer and John. Although that marriage eventually ended, Joanne’s heart expanded with her subsequent marriages. She married Jerry Moore, becoming a devoted stepmother to Candice, Carla, Bradley, Brian, and Danielle, and multiple step-grandchildren. Later, in 2013, she was united in marriage with Theodore “Ted” Gladden, who lovingly stood by her side until the end and was loved dearly by her step kids Sigrid (Stu)Letcher, granddaughter Thea Letcher and Erik (Courtney) Gladden.

Joanne’s commitment to service was evident through her involvement in Tri-T, hospice work, and her active participation in her church community in Iowa City. These pursuits spoke to her compassionate spirit and her desire to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.

She is survived by her husband, Theodore “Ted” Gladden of Green Valley, Arizona; her daughter Jennifer (Chris) Burkart of Hiawatha, Iowa; her son John (Julie) Nath of Janesville, Wisconsin; grandchildren Derek, Tanner (Rebecca), John, Jillian, Josephine, and Jordan; great-grandchildren Sedric, Kamdyn, and Lake; and her siblings Dennis (Jean) Smith, Janine (James) Johnson, and Doug (Linda) Smith. Joanne was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Robert and Ruthetta (Merchant) Smith.

Joanne Gladden’s life was a beautiful tapestry woven with love, resilience, and joy. Those who knew her will forever carry the warmth of her spirit and the lasting impact of her kindness in their hearts. She passed comfortably, surrounded by love at her cherished lake home, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know her.

The service to celebrate Joanne’s life will be held at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service at 2720 Muscatine Ave, Iowa City, IA 52240 on Friday, June 19th. Visitation will start at 9:00 am with a service to follow at 11:00 am. Burial will follow at Oakland Cemetery in Iowa City.
