John Hoffman, 92, died on Saturday, February 14, 2015 at Sanford Hospital in Thief River Falls, MN. Visitation will be held from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM with a service at 2:00 PM on Monday, March 2, 2015 at Johnson Funeral Service, Thief River Falls, MN with Father Rick Lambert Officiating. Burial will follow at St. Bernard's Catholic Cemetery, Thief River Falls, MN. John Carl Hoffman was born on October 29, 1922 at home in Excel Township near Holt, MN, the son of John and Mary (Steiner) Hoffman. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Thief River Falls, MN. John attended school in Holt through 8th grade. Aspiring to become a veterinarian, John spent time with the local vet, learning the trade. Upon his father's death, John took over the family farm which included dairy and beef cattle, horses, sheep, chickens, and grain crops. His time spent with the local veterinarian helped in success as a farmer. In 1957 John was united in marriage to Marcella Adeline Lowe at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Thief River Falls. Along with Marcella's three children Richard, Dennis, and Paulette, John and Marcella's family grew when their children Jerry and Judith were born. Over the years John and Marcella expanded the farming operation. He was mechanical and enjoyed working in his shop fixing and tinkering. John was an avid hunter, never missing a hunting season until health issues arose. His other interests included trapping and being outdoors. In September of 1998 Marcella passed away. John remained on the farm until his passing. He is survived by his children Jerry Hoffman of Thief River Falls, MN, and Judy (Tim) Otto of Roseau, MN; step-children Dennis Hoffman of Janesville, WI, and Paulette (David) Odette of Thief River Falls, MN; grandchildren Jordan Hoffman of Fargo, ND, Matthew Otto of Thief River Falls, MN, Jessica Otto of Roseau, MN, Mark Otto of St. Cloud, MN, Christina Otto and Chelsea Otto both of Roseau, MN; step-grandchildren Elizabeth (Travis Krumholz) Odette of Minneapolis, MN, and Kevin Odette of Grand Forks, ND; great-grandchildren Easton Hoffman of Fargo, ND and Andrea Nicole Bitzer, Roseau, MN; step great-grandson Evan Krumholz; sister Mary Peterson of Mankato, MN; brother-in-law John Guptill of St. Cloud, MN; nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. He is preceded in death by his wife Marcella; his parents John and Mary; step-son Richard; sisters Helen Hoffman and Clair Guptill and his brother-in-law Roy Peterson.
