John Weir, 91, died Monday, October 8, 2007 at Hillcrest Nursing Home, Red Lake Falls, MN.


Funeral service will be 1 PM, Wednesday, October 10, 2007 at Johnson Funeral Service, Thief River Falls with Reverend Phil Schmidt officiating. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery, Hallock, MN.

John Wilfred Weir was born May 3, 1916 at Glaston, ND to Wilfred and Carrie (McDonald) Weir. He spent part of his childhood in Saskatchewan, Canada, then, Bathgate, ND, where John started school. At the age of 8, he moved with his family to Detroit, MI, living there until he was 17 years old, when the family moved back to North Dakota near Bowesmont. He worked on the family farm until he purchased his own land.

On November 10, 1943, John was united in marriage to Isabel Phelps at Hallock, MN. The couple lived in the Bowesmont and Joliet, ND area. In 1963, they moved to the Humboldt-St. Vincent area where they farmed. In 1984, the couple moved to Hallock and in 1988, to Thief River Falls, MN.

He farmed grain and dairy. He was a farmer to the core! In March of 2006, John moved to Hillcrest Nursing Home, Red Lake Falls.

John is survived by daughters: Janet Wenger, Great Falls, MT, Betty (Meredith) Hovet, West Fargo, ND, Louise Rurode, Custer, SD and Marilyn Weir, Thief River Falls, MN; 6 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren and expecting another.

He was preceded in death by wife, Isabel on January 18, 2001; a son David on February 18, 1981; parents and sister, Gertrude Boychuk.
