Obituary

Joseph Fisher, 86, died on Tuesday, March 20, 2012 at Riverview Healthcare Center in Crookston, MN. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM, Saturday, March 24, 2012 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Red Lake Falls, MN with Father Chuck Huck presiding. Burial will follow in St. Vincent de Paul Cemetery in Plummer, MN. Visitation will be Friday 5-8 PM, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Red Lake Falls, MN with a Prayer Service at 7:00 PM. Visitation will also be for one hour prior to the Mass on Saturday at the church. Joseph Florian Fisher was born on November 30, 1925 to Joseph F. and Bertha (Armburst) Fischer in Dickinson, ND. He was baptized at St. Joseph Catholic Parish in Dickinson, ND. He grew up on a farm near Dickinson, ND. He attended school through the 8th grade at a Wild Rose District Country School. As a young man, he worked for area farmers near Medora and the Badlands of North Dakota for $1 a day plus room and board. He loved breaking and riding horses when he was a young man. When he turned 18 years old, he joined the Merchant Marines. He traveled around the world until 1947. He returned home to North Dakota and met his future wife Helen. He was united in marriage to Helen Dukart on November 5, 1947 at St Pius Church in Shefield, ND. They started out in a sod house in Stark County. After a year, they moved to Billings County, ND south of Belfield, ND where they farmed for 20 years. In 1967, they packed up and moved to a farm NE of Plummer, MN. They had a grain, beef, and dairy farm. They milked up to 80 milk cows at one time. He was instrumental in starting the National Beef Association where he served as president for two years. In 1976, they stopped farming and moved to a quarter of their land on the Clearwater River. They started a sawmill business and cut and sold lumber for many years. In August of 2007, they moved to Sunset Court Apartments in Red Lake Falls. Joe was an avid gardener and enjoyed growing roses and many other flowers. In the off seasons during his farming years, he spent many hours working on ideas for inventions. After retiring, he spent hours in his woodshop building furniture for his family. He took great pleasure in making oak crosses and crucifixes for family and grandchildren. He was also a great hunter and fisherman throughout most of his life. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Helen, of Red Lake Falls, MN, 14 children: Clara (Bruce Olson) Everson, Warroad, MN, and her children Sean (Elaine) Everson, Todd Everson, Kelly (Jace Nelson) Everson; Charles Fisher, Plummer, MN, James Fisher, Santa Barbara, CA, Raymond (Marilyn) Fisher, Plummer, MN, and their children: Emily (Matt) Knutson, Erica (Shannon) Miller, Ryan (Emily Johnson) Fisher; David (Shari) Fisher, Chisholm, MN and their children Jessica (Paul) Valento, Corissa (Eric)Raatsi Thomas (Brenda) Fisher, Thief River Falls, MN, and their children Korbi (Chris Thompson) Fisher, Hayley Fisher; Linda (Brent) Hemly, Plummer, MN, and their children: Lindsey Hemly, Riley (David) Johnson; Gerald (Melanie) Fisher, LaQuinta, CA, and their children, Clayton and Cody Fisher; Harvey (Marcie) Fisher, Holt, MN, and their grandson Holden Engman, Diane (Jon) Anderson, Twin Valley, MN and their children Michael (Allie Amundson) Fisher, Matthew Anderson; Kenneth (Ruth) Fisher, Grand Forks, ND and their children: Katrina, Tom, Abby Fisher and Lauren Larsen; Bonnie (Bob) Vidlund, Forest Lake, MN and her children Zachary, Hanna, Cameron Vidlund; Eugene Fisher, Chaska, MN, John (Angie) Fisher, Chanhassen, MN, and their two children Isabel and Amelia Fisher, 23 grandchildren: 11 great grandchildren, 6 siblings: Frank (Katie) Fisher, Oregon, Rosemary (George) Berger, Dickinson, ND, Tillie (Stanly) Kuntz, Belfield, ND, Florence (Eugene) Erickson, Wisconsin, Anna (Clarence) Huschka, Miles City, MT, Albert (Loraine) Fisher, Plummer, MN. Joseph was preceded in death by one son, Paul Fisher, his parents, one brother John Fisher.
