Joyce Carlson, 78, died on Friday, July 16, 2004 at the Northwest Medical Center in Thief River Falls, MN.

Funeral services will be 11:00 AM on Tuesday, July 20, 2004 at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Plummer, MN with Rev. Arthur Ohlwine officiating. Burial will follow in the Emardville Cemetery, rural Plummer, MN.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 PM on Monday, July 19, 2004 at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Plummer with a 7:00 PM Prayer Service on Monday evening. Visitation will also be held for one hour prior to the services at the church on Tuesday.

Joyce Mabel Rosten was born on July 7, 1926 near Woodside, in Godfrey Township in Polk County, MN to John and Mabel (Bergum) Rosten. She was baptized on July 28, 1926 at the Maple Lake Lutheran Church, Maple Lake, MN. She was confirmed on October 6, 1940 at the Salem Lutheran Church in Oklee, MN. Joyce attended school in Plummer graduating from Pershing High School in Plummer on June 2, 1944. She worked at various jobs in Minneapolis, and Kalamazoo, MI, and at the Excello Airplane parts factory in Detroit, MI until she was married.

Joyce was united in marriage to Burton Raymond Carlson on April 17, 1946 in Oklee, MN. After her children had left home, Joyce worked at the Hillcrest Nursing Home in Red Lake Falls, and at the Red Lake Falls Vet Clinic.

Joyce was known for her hospitality. Her hobbies included gardening, quilting, crocheting, cooking, reading, and making lefse. Her greatest joy came from spending time with her family.

Joyce was a member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Plummer, served for 20 years as secretary of the Lutheran Womens Missionary League. She served on he NW Area Agency on Aging Board, and was a Breast Cancer Survivor. Their farm was a 1994 Century Farm and Joyce and Burton also received the 2000 Valley Farmer and Homemaker Award.

Joyce is survived by three children: Scharlene (Don) Fox, of Plummer, MN; Robert (JoEllen) Carlson of Moorhead, MN; and Paula (Jason) Cater of Plummer, MN; six grandchildren: Debra (Scott) Greelis of Moorhead, MN; Matthew (Kristi) Carlson of Moorhead, MN; Coralie Carlson of Miami, FL; David (Rachel) Fox of Owatonna, MN; Adam and Zachary Cater of Plummer, MN; one great grandson, Jack Greelis of Moorhead, MN; one sister Delores (Jerry) Rodenbo, of Duluth, MN; and one brother Ray (Irene) Rosten, of Plummer, MN; two sisters in law Violet (Warren) Willenburg of Lewisville, TX; Jane (Gerry) Robbins of Pine City, MN; and one brother in law Merlin (Judy) Carlson of Plummer. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, husband Burton on October 13, 2003, three brothers, infant Oris Donald Rosten, Oris Donald Rosten, Paul Iver Rosten, and one niece Anita Carlson.
