Judy Schafer, of Red Lake Falls, MN passed away on Wednesday, December 7, 2016 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday December 12, 2016 at 10:30 AM in St Joseph Catholic Church in Red Lake Falls, MN with Father Bob Schreiner Officiating. Burial will be held at St. Joseph/Mary Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, 5 – 8 PM with a 7:00 prayer service at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Red Lake Falls and also one hour prior to the service.
Judith "Judy" Ann Schafer was born June 22, 1945 at St. Francis Hospital in Crookston, MN daughter of Harry and Mary (Ridge) Zornig. She was raised on her family farm North West of Red Lake Falls, MN. Attended St. Joseph School for 8 years and graduated from Lafayette High School in 1963. She attended Sisters of St. Joseph Nursing School in Grand Forks, ND in the 3 year RN program. Judy worked at St. Michael's Hospital in Grand Forks as head nurse of Pediatrics.
On September 13, 1969 she was united in marriage to Robert Schafer at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Red Lake Falls, MN. To this union two sons were born Mike and Brian. The couple made their home in Red Lake Falls where they have continued to live their entire life. Judy was employed as director of nursing at Hillcrest Nursing Home for many years. She was later employed at St. John's Hospital in Red Lake Falls until its closing. She returned to Hillcrest Nursing Home until MS limited her ability to preform her job.
Judy enjoyed cooking, canning and making sure her family was taken care of. She also enjoyed cake decorating, ceramics and knitting afghan's, shopping, visiting her family and friends, making and sending birthday cards. Most of all she loved the time spent with her grandchildren. She was an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.
Judy is survived by her husband Robert of 47 years; children Michael Schafer of Red Lake Falls, MN and Brian (Teresa) Schafer of Red Lake Falls, MN; grandchildren Paige, Kayla and Rebecca Schafer of Red Lake Falls, MN along with several cousins; her longtime friend Hazel Perras. Brothers-in-law Larry (Candace) Schafer of Red Lake Falls, MN, Willard (Barb) Schafer of Lakeville, MN, Eugene (special friend Ann Billings) Schafer of Lake Bronson, MN, nieces and nephews Lori (Lyndon) Schultz, Barry (Heidi) Boutain, Carrie Schafer, Jill Schafer, Kathleen (Ryan) Reynolds, Matt Schafer, Angela Schafer, Maribeth Schafer.
Judy is preceded in death by her parents, sister-in-law Margaret (Dale) Boutain, nephew Jeff Boutain, several aunts and uncles and Ray Perras.
