Karl Sundberg, 84, died Thursday, September 16, 2004 at Northwest Medical Center, Thief River Falls, MN.
Karl M. Sundberg was born March 18, 1920 in Spruce Grove Township, Beltrami County, MN, the son of Eric Lars and Angeline (Anderson) Sundberg. He attended Spruce Grove School and graduated from Lincoln High School in Thief River Falls.
Karl entered the United States Navy on August 8, 1942 and served aboard the USS Salt Lake City as Seaman Second Class until being Honorably Discharged on November 10, 1945. He worked at Douglas Aircraft Company in Long Beach, CA before entering the military service, he also farmed with his father and brothers, and enjoyed logging and running his sawmill. Karl was united in marriage to Mabel (Levang) McLean on November 25, 1967. He worked 20 years at the Grygla Co-op Store as the Hardware Manager. Karl was known for being able to find just the right part for everyone.
Karl liked to play horseshoes, enjoyed playing his accordion with his brothers, gardening at his log cabin, hunting deer and traveling to his ship reunions to visit his Navy buddies.
He was a member of the Grygla City Council, MarBel Homes Board of Directors, Lions Club and a lifetime member of the VFW.
Karl is survived by his wife, Mabel of Grygla, MN; five step children: Darlene (Wallace) Anderson of Goodridge, MN, Sandy (Danny) Bragg of Lakeville, MN, Bette (Glenn) Sundberg of Grand Forks, ND, Joy (Ellis) Austin of East Grand Forks, MN and Julie (Steve) Sparby of Grygla, MN; 16 grandchildren: Kim Schwinden, Tony and Chris McLean, Debra Race, Dawn Haugen, Brent Anderson, Jennifer Herbst, Paul Bragg, Sean Sundberg, Sara Dudley, Eric Austin, Darrin Austin, Andrea Austin and Adam, Greg and Keith Sparby; 15 great grandchildren: Brianna, Katie and Abby Schwinden, Chloe McLean, Brittany and Kristen Race, Kensie and Ian Haugen, Brooke Anderson, Kassandra and Brandon Herbst, Felicity and Heath Austin and Taylor and Emily McLean; five sisters-in-law: Maxine Sundberg, Esther Sundberg, Christine Hart, Pearl Danielson and Violet Reynolds; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers and sisters: Roland Sundberg, Robert Sundberg, Clayton Sundberg, Evelyn Wogenson, Lonia Wold, Lydia Phillips and Florence Sundberg; and step son, Gerald McLean.
