Kay Ann Smillie was born was January 9, 1943 at St. John's Hospital in Fargo, ND the daughter of James and Edna (Johnson) Smillie. The family lived in a few places in North Dakota and Minnesota eventually settling in Thief River Falls, MN in 1956. Kay attended schools in Thief River Falls, MN and graduated from Lincoln High School. She went on to attend Northland Junior College in Thief River Falls and then Moorhead State Teachers College in Moorhead, MN. Kay did some work as a waitress at the Golden Restaurant in Grand Forks, ND, also worked at her father's drug store, a clothing store and at a drug store in Fargo, ND in her early adulthood. Until recently, Kay worked at Northern Lights Bookstore in Thief River Falls, MN. Kay liked watching news programs on television, listening to music, going to Dee's Kitchen every Friday and especially liked to smoke cigarettes. In the past she has enjoyed sewing, reading and playing cards. Survivors include cousin, Joyce (Keith) Junge of Detroit Lakes, MN; and other relatives and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents.
