Kenneth Arnold Coan was born August 5, 1935 at Mercy Hospital in Thief River Falls, MN. He is the first born to Bert and Inga (Hanson) Coan. Kenneth was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith. He attended the Old Glory Country School in Highlanding Township. Kenny later attended school in Goodridge and completed school through the 8th grade. During the winter months he stayed in Goodridge with his Aunt Selma, going home when weather permitted. To complete his education he attended small engine repair classes at Goodridge Public School.
On June 22, 1963, Kenny was united in marriage to Marjorie Srnsky at St. John Lutheran Church parsonage in Thief River Falls. To this union there were four children born: Marcia, Roger, Robert, Michelle. In the early years of their marriage, Kenny and Margie farmed with Bert and Inga and during the winters of 1964 and 1965 he logged on the ridge on the Red Lake Reservation. In 1969 Kenny went to work for Swenson Equipment in Oklee during the winter months repairing snowmobiles.
In 1973 Kenny and Margie established their own farmstead in Highlanding Township, Pennington County. Kenny enjoyed watching his farm grow into a diversified operation which included cows, pigs and small grains. He had great satisfaction watching his sons Roger and Robert take over the farm in 1990 and in 1995 he retired because of health problems.
In his younger years, Kenny enjoyed racing snowmobiles and throughout his years enjoyed riding snowmobiles, hunting deer and spending time with his family and friends. He was a member of the Faith Lutheran Church in Goodridge; he had served on the board at the Oklee Elevator, was a member of the Goodridge Trailblazers Snowmobile Club, was a state fire warden for over 25 years, and served on the Highlanding Township Board as Supervisor for many years. After retirement Kenny also enjoyed driving around and looking at crops, deer and machinery. He also enjoyed looking through his photo albums and his many pictures he received from family and friends.
Survivors include his four children; Marcia (Brian) Culkins of Elk River, MN, Roger (Roxann) Coan of Goodridge, MN, Robert (Deanna) Coan of Goodridge, MN, and Michelle (Jason) Richard of Dickinson, ND; 10 grandchildren, Jonas, Megan, Vivian, Jordan, Mariah, Mercedes, Spencer, Morgan, Maizie, and Lane; sister, Dorothy (Edgar) Miller of Goodridge, MN; four nieces and nephews, MariLou Anderson of Grygla, MN, Shirley (Bruce) Wegley, Jack (Jayne) Miller, and Gary Miller all of Goodridge, MN; and Kennys life-long best friend, Lynn (Norma) Hanson of Goodridge, MN; and many other relatives and friends.
