Obituary

Laverne Eugene Kappedal 75 of rural Plummer, MN went home to be with the LORD on Thursday, December 17, 2020 at Sanford Medical Center in Fargo, ND.

Due to the covid-19 pandemic Interment of Laverne's ashes was held on Tuesday, December 29, 2020 at 2:00 PM by Johnson Funeral Service in at Emardville Cemetery near Plummer, MN. Reverend Jonathan Dodson Officiated. Due to these uncertain times and family scattered throughout the US his family asks that in lieu of a service his friends and family might remember Laverne in their own special way on his birthday April 29th at 1pm CT. All memories, stories, and comments shared here are welcomed and appreciated.

Laverne Eugene Kappedal was born April 29, 1945 in Bremerton, WA,

son of the late Albert Kappedal and the late Agnes (Pike) Kappedal Westerlund. He moved to Minnesota with his parents at an early age. He attended school at Terrebonne and Red Lake Falls, MN. He joined the US Navy in 1967. While he ship was anchored near Los Angeles he worked part time at the famous Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood. In 1971 a boiler on his ship exploded and he was severely burned and spent a month in the hospital. He served almost all of his 4 years on the USS Valley Forge and was honorably discharged in 1971. During his service in the US Navy he was awarded: The National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Metal with 2 Bronze Stars and Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon.

On March 2nd, 1976 he was united in marriage to Leona Mae Berger at St. John Lutheran Church in Red Lake Falls, MN. The couple moved to Sioux Falls, SD where they lived for 8 years. They moved back to Minnesota where they lived in Plummer for a short time and then moved to Thief River Falls where they lived from 1984 until 1992 when they moved to a home in the country near Plummer where Laverne continued to reside after Leona's death in 2013.

Besides his wife and his parents Laverne was proceeded in death by his sister Annabelle (Kappedal) Newman, sister in law Bonnie (Book) Kappedal, brother Orland Kappedal, sister in law Mary (Husman) Kappedal, sister Lorraine (Kappedal) Phillips, brother in law Robert Phillips Sr., nephew Michael D. Secory, niece Breanna (Bree) Secory, half sister Ethel (Kappedal) Nelson and her husband Seymore, half sister Alma (Kappedal) Oftelie and her husband Oliver.

Laverne enjoyed his various pets, deer hunting, reading the Bible, Internet news, opera, and music talent of every kind, history and war documentaries, and trips to see family as often as he could. He was so thankful for Chuck Simpson and Roger Gallant for their friendship and help throughout the years as they gave him rides, brought him groceries and plowed his drive when he couldn't. Laverne's family is grateful to them as well.

Laverne is survived by his brother Gordon Kappedal of Minneapolis, MN and his sister Judy (Don) Secory of Gilbert, AZ and many nieces and nephews. He will be missed and always remembered as a kind and gentle soul.
