Lawrence Kenneth Neuschwander was born on August 17, 1923 east of Grygla, MN in Benville Township, the son of William and Palma (Windsnes) Neuschwander. As a young lad, he moved with his family to Ipswich, SD, Appleton, MN and back to Grygla, MN. They settled on a farm in Valley Township, Marshall County, MN, west of Grygla. Lawrence was baptized as an adult. He attended country school and graduated from Goodridge High School in 1941. Lawrence then stayed home to help on the family farm. On August 23, 1952, Lawrence was united in marriage to Arlyne Ann Kiesow at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Goodridge, MN. They purchased their farm in Valley Township, Marshall County, MN where they raised five children: Kenneth, Dale, Susan, Kathy and Ricky. They owned and operated their farm of small grains, dairy and beef cattle, hogs and horses. In 1956 he gained employment with the Marshall-Beltrami Soil Conservation District. One of Lawrence's favorite parts of this job was planting trees. He retired from the Soil Conservation District in 1991. He also worked carpentry for Red McLean. Lawrence left the farm due to failing health in December 2008 and Arlyne left the farm due to failing health in October 2009. They made their home together at the Knute Nelson Home in Alexandria, MN near their daughter Susan. Lawrence enjoyed life. He loved taking trips, going to auction sales and sales barns, visiting implement dealerships, visiting with anyone who would talk whether he knew them or not and being part of the annual Grygla Fall Festival parades, talent shows and community plays. There was never a time that a neighbor needed help that Lawrence didn't show up. He also enjoyed dancing, and is known for dancing the jig! His passion was farming and tending to his cattle. He was loyal, hard-working, cared about his family and knew how to have fun. Lawrence also served on the Valley Township Board for many years.
