Obituary

Lawrence Shetler, 81, died Thursday August 20, 2015 at his residence in Thief River Falls, MN, surrounded by his loving family. Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, August 24, 2015 at 10:30 AM at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Thief River Falls with Father Rick Lambert Officiating. Burial will be at St. Bernard's Catholic Cemetery, Thief River Falls, MN. Visitation will be Sunday, August 23, 2015 from 3 - 6 with a 5:00 PM prayer service at St. Bernard's Catholic Church and also one hour prior to the service on Monday. Lawrence "Larry" J. Shetler was born February 26, 1934 at Thief River Falls, MN, the son of Roy and Marie (Blazek) Shetler. He attended school graduating from Lincoln High School, Thief River Falls in 1951. Larry served his country with the United States Navy from January 1952 until his honorable discharge in February 1955. He served on the USS Dixie. On June 11, 1955, Larry was united in marriage to Darlene (Dolly) M. Pahlen at St. Bernard's Church, Thief River Falls. The couple made their home in Thief River Falls where he worked for his father at the Shetler's Hatcheries. They moved to St. Paul area where Larry drove city bus and in 1961 they returned to Thief River Falls where he continued to work at the hatchery. He worked on the pipeline for several seasons before start at Arctic Cat where he worked until his retirement on May 31, 2003. Larry enjoyed fishing, camping, golfing and bowling, but most of all spending time with his family. Larry was a previous member of the American Legion, was a supporter of wounded warriors and was an instructor in Marriage Encounters. Survivors include his loving wife of 60 years Dolly, Thief River Falls, MN; children: Terri (Richard) Olson, Thief River Falls, Tamera (Wayne) George, Warroad, MN, Don (Jan) Shetler, Maricopa, AZ, Lynn (John) DeVault, Bemidji, MN; Renae (Andy) Casperson, Lake Park, MN, Gordy (Michaun) Shetler, of Harrisburg, SD and Amy (Jeff) Wilkens, West Fargo, ND; grandchildren: Angela Cleberg, Tera Hufnagle, Eric Olson, Michael Shetler, Joshua Harris and Carissa Hultgren, Karen Shetler, Ryan Leskiw, Kyle Leskiw, Kayla Grina, Jake Grina, Tyler Shetler, Ethan Shetler, Allen Wilkens, Jessica Wilkens, and Amanda Wilkens; step-grandchildren Jesse George, Anthony George, Quincey George, Willy George, Daphne Mathesen and Whitney Stenvik; great-grandchildren: Jenna, Marah, Alex and Violet Olson, Zion Cleberg, Leah and Emma Hufnagle; step great-grandchildren Nevaeh George, Amelia Stenvik and Linda Mathesen: brothers and sister: Tom (Susan) Shetler, St. Paul, MN, David (Laura) Shetler, Newfolden, MN and Kathy (Tim) Dahlstrom, Hector, MN and step-mom, Dorothy Shetler, Hector, MN. He is preceded by parents, Roy Shetler and Marie Helm step-father Donald Helm and grandparents.
