He was raised on the family farm North of Goodridge, MN and attended school in Goodridge graduating class of 1957.  He spent a couple summers during high school on the Iron Range working on the Railroad. Following graduation he went to work for the Dow Key Corporation in Thief River Falls until the company moved to Colorado.

On December 6, 1958 he was united in marriage to Sharon Miller at the Parsonage in Goodridge, MN. To this union 3 daughters were born Rosalee, Roxanne and Rhonda.  In 1966 they moved to Goodridge and then he became a Standard Bulk agent serving the Goodridge, Grygla and Fourtown area. He sold Arctic Cat Snowmobile's out of his home in Goodridge, drove school bus, and farmed with his father on the family farm.

In the fall of 1973 Leon and Sharon purchased the family farm where they continued to reside and raise their three girls. In 1979 they moved into Thief River Falls where Leon sold farm real estate for the Berkner Agency for several years prior to moving back to the Goodridge farm. In 2007 they retired from farming and moved to rural Thief River Falls.
