Obituary

Leonard Newhouse, 92, died Sunday, October 1, 2006 at Pioneer Memorial Care Center, Erskine, MN.

Funeral service will be 11 AM, Friday, October 6, 2006, at Our Saviors Lutheran Church, Grygla, MN with Reverend Mary Gilthvedt officiating. Burial will be at Our Saviors Cemetery, Hamre Township, Beltrami County, MN.

Visitation will be 2 " 5 PM, Thursday, October 5, 2006 at Johnson Funeral Service, Thief River Falls, MN and for one hour prior to service at the church, Friday.

Leonard George Newhouse was born April 30, 1914 in Wilmington, MN, the son of Theodore and Helen (Jelle) Newhouse. The family came to Beltrami County in 1917, where his father took a homestead in Hamre Township. He was baptized in Wilmington and confirmed at St. Pauli Evangelical Church, Jelle, MN, where he grew up and attended country school.

In 1917, he moved with the family to the homestead near Fourtown, MN, where he lived and farmed with his brother, Elmer until 1996, except for a time that he worked at International in Rockford, IL. He then moved into Grygla until he entered the nursing Home. He recently lived at Pioneer Memorial Home in Erskine, MN, until his death.

Leonard enjoyed hunting deer, fishing, playing horse shoe, playing pinochle and whist card games with family and friends.

He was a lifelong member of Our Saviors and a lifelong farmer in Hamre Township, where he also served as township treasurer. He also held membership with Grygla Lions Club and Senior Citizens Club.

Leonard is survived by many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by parents, sisters, Evelyn (Gullick) Byklum and Myrtle (John) Byklum and a brother, Elmer Newhouse.
