LeRoy W. Sustad, 83, Viking, MN died Friday, May 21, 2004 at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home, Warren, MN.
LeRoy William Sustad was born February 2, 1921, son of the late Henry and Tillie (Tangquist) Sustad at the home of his grandparents Olaf and Sarah (Sjostedt) Sustad farm near Viking. He attended the Swedish Mission Church now known as the Viking Covenant Church where he was baptized, confirmed and has been a life long member. He attended Sunday school, was in the young peoples organization, and served on various boards. He also sang in the mixed quartet as well as a male quartet, for the Rural Church of the Air, a radio broadcast on Sunday evenings. This was originally broadcast from the church.
LeRoy attended the Drotts Country School walking 1 ½ miles each way. He farmed with his parents and brother Orville, where he grew to manhood. In 1941, the buildings were erected and the family moved to their present farm near Viking. Due to farming operations, he was exempt from active military duty, but was called to Fort Snelling and accepted in August 1945 just at the time WWII was ending.
On June 15, 1949, LeRoy was united in marriage to Ruth Mae Peterson of Akeley, MN, at First Covenant Church in Minneapolis. The couple continued to farm near Viking and he also worked in the maintenance department for the Soo Line Railroad, first in the Viking " Rosewood Section, then Warren and Thief River Falls section retiring in 1986.
LeRoy is survived by his wife Ruth of Viking, two children Daniel (Donna) Sustad of Viking, Peggy Ann (Daniel) Hogberg of Thornton, CO, one brother Orville (Marion) Sustad of Westminster, CO; seven grandchildren and families and eight great-grandchildren. He is also survived by many cousins, nephews and nieces.
LeRoy greatly enjoyed being with family and friends, country living and camping and spending time at various Bible Camps. LeRoy and Ruth enjoyed traveling, which included Alaska, Sweden and Hawaii.
Due to failing health, he was admitted to Good Samaritan Center in Warren on September 17, 2003, where he has since resided. He passed away there Friday evening, May 21, 2004.
He is preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, brothers in law and sisters in law and many other relatives.
