Lewis Dean
Doyea
July 11, 1947 – March 22, 2026
Lewis Dean Doyea, was born on July 11, 1947, at St. Francis Hospital in Crookston, MN to Raymond and Lorraine (Kennedy) Doyea. Lewis passed away on March 22, 2026 at home surrounded by his family at the age of 78. He was a cherished husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend whose strength, generous heart, and zest for life left a lasting imprint on all who knew him.
Lewis at age 5 and his sister Diane at age 9, spent their early childhood in Dorothy, MN. In 1952 the family moved to Beltrami, MN and purchased Ray & Lorraine Café. The family continued to grow as brother Danny, sisters Debbie and Lana were born. Beltrami was a community he would call home for much of his life. He was baptized in Dorothy and confirmed at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Fertile, MN.
He attended Beltrami School through the eighth grade and later earned his GED from Fertile High School. He later pursued higher education at Ely Community College, where he earned a degree in Conservation Technology, a field that reflected his practical skills, love of the outdoors and hardworking nature.
Following graduation, Lewis proudly served in the United States Army for two years, including one year in Vietnam. His bravery and dedication earned him two Bronze Stars and three Purple Hearts—honors that reflect his courage and sacrifice.
On November 29, 1969, Lewis married Marilyn Glass at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Fertile. Together they built a life grounded in love, faith, and family, raising four children: Stacey, Denise, Kristi, and Ryan. Lewis was a devoted husband and father, whose wisdom and steady presence were the foundation of his home.
In 1976, Lewis began a long and dedicated career with the State of Minnesota Forestry. He started his work near Kabetogama Lake, before transferring to Roy Lake, where he worked for five years and then continued his service in Bagley. After 31 years of commitment and excellence, Lewis retired in 2007, leaving behind a legacy of integrity, reliability, and leadership.
Lewis found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He loved strumming his guitar with family and friends and singing good old-time country music. He also enjoyed spending time at the casino and playing bingo. He loved fishing and hunting, sharing countless memorable trips with his son. He had a passion for spear fishing and took pride in making and collecting decoys, that he proudly displayed on the wall. One of his proudest moments was landing a 25.6 pound northern pike, a trophy that still hangs on the wall.
He loved his family deeply and made it a tradition to cook dinner for them every Wednesday, cherishing the laughter, stories, and memories they shared. He especially treasured his hunting adventures, whether it was a special trip with his son or making breakfast in the deer stand with his grandkids.
He especially enjoyed riding through the woods with Marilyn on their Ranger, soaking in the peace and beauty of nature. Together, they enjoyed life in their home for 45 years, nestled in the woods south of Bagley.
A proud member of the American Legion Post in Bagley, Lewis remained deeply connected to his fellow veterans and community. Lewis and Marilyn also bought and distributed Christmas gifts to every resident at Country Place assisted living, where his mother-in-law Doris resided. Lewis dressed up as Santa Claus for many years.
Lewis is survived by his beloved wife Marilyn, his children, Stacey (Mike) Hron, Denise (Nathan) LaFriniere, Kristi Doyea, and Ryan (Ashley) Doyea. Grandchildren Brandi (Dusty), Austin, Kyle (Aimee), Spencer (Mackenzie), Jaylee (Dylan), Cody, Kinzie, Olivia and Cash. Great-grandchildren Paige, Briella, Gunner, Lilah, Elliana, Adley, Kato, Aria, Sophie, James, Malani and Presley, who all brought him immense joy. Sisters, Diane Mulcahy, Debbie (Danny) Larson, Lana (Craig) VanderLinden, and sister-in-law, Mary Doyea.
Lewis is preceded in death by his parents Raymond and Lorraine Doyea, brother Danny Doyea, grandson Chase Hron, and brother-in-law William Mulcahy.
Louie will be remembered as truly “one of a kind,” known for his mischievous sensor of humor, unforgettable pranks and the laughter he brought wherever he went. He often joked that he should have written a book to share all his stories. His legacy lives on in the hearts of those who loved him and he will be dearly missed by all.
