Lillian Gertrude Wools was born August 30, 1918 in Forest River, ND to LeeRoy and Harriet (Phillips) Wools. Lillian was the youngest of 13 children. She graduated from Forest River High School while living with Allen and Annie Woods, her oldest sister. Following high school Lillian moved to the Twin Cities where she worked and lived with her sister Alice and her husband Leo Carpentier. In her early teens she met Douglas H. Stewart of Gilby, ND at Sunday school and they became sweethearts. Doug and Lillian were united in marriage in Spring Lake Park, MN on August 2, 1940 a few months after Doug graduated from the University of North Dakota. In 1941 Doug's job required a transfer to California where they lived in a number of cities. Following the end of World War II in the fall of 1945, they returned to Grand Forks and the next year settled in Thief River Falls after Doug was appointed City Engineer. Lillian enjoyed being a homemaker supporting Doug, who had gone into private practice as a consulting engineer and land surveyor, and their three sons and their busy schedules. To most people in town Lillian was known as "Susie," a nickname Doug had given her. Susie had a passion for interior decorating and design, loved entertaining friends and family and was famous for her wild duck and grouse dinners. Lillian was member of the Methodist Church and Martha Circle. She was very involved in the selection of furnishings for the new church. In her later years she took up golf and enjoyed many rounds with Doug and friends. Following his retirement in 1979, Doug and Susie traveled and spent winters on Marco Island, FL, in Rockport, TX and in Green Valley, AZ, eventually purchasing a condo in Naples, FL about 1990. They split their time in the warmer months between their home on Birch Lane Drive and their cabin at Morson, Ontario, on Lake of the Woods. Lillian is survived by 3 children: Donald (Sheron) Stewart, Thief River Falls, MN, John Stewart, Eagan, MN, Scott Stewart, Phoenix, AZ; grandchildren Colleen (Mike) Elftmann, Carver, MN, Todd (Laurissa) Stewart, Andover, MN, Melanie Stewart (Fabio Mariuci), Columbia Heights, MN, Natasha Stewart (Eric Eaton), Glendale, AZ, and great grandchildren Mitch, Ryan, Kayla and Sayda Elftmann, Carver, MN, Alia and Trygg Stewart and Britta and Annika Ahlstrand, Andover, MN, Luca Stewart-Mariuci, Columbia Heights, MN, and Andrew Blanchard, Gianna and Mia Eaton, Glendale, AZ.
