Loretta Elizabeth (Schmitz) Knott was born on October 3, 1925 in Black River Township in Pennington County daughter of Crispen Edward and Freida Elizabeth (Schindler) Schmitz. She attended school in a one-room schoolhouse in Wylie Township, leaving at a young age to help care for her brothers after the loss of her mother following a lengthy illness.
On June 14,1949 Loretta was united in marriage to LaVern Harvey Knott at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Red Lake Falls. They made their home and raised 15 children, including two sets of twins, on their farm, where Loretta continued to reside until her passing.
Loretta loved all things nature and enjoyed gardening, cruising the farm on her golf-cart, her apple trees, hummingbirds, and country air. She looked forward to coffee parties with her lady friends. She called herself a "dump-dump" cook (cooked without recipes!), but she was renowned for her State Fair ribbon-winning bread and her delicious pies. No one left her home hungry! Loretta was a devout Catholic and believed all hardships should be offered up to the Good Lord. When she was no longer physically able to attend Mass, she continued to worship watching Sunday Mass on television. She was a current member of Catholic Daughters Court St. Cecelia, and past member of St. Anne's Society and The Ladies Guild. She was honored with the 1994 Valley Farmer and Homemaker Award for Red Lake County. Her greatest passion, aside from her family, was being a strong supporter of MCCL (Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life) helping give voice to protect unborn babies.
Loretta is survived by her children James (Carol) of Red Lake Falls; Lorraine (Bruce) Galland, Bagley; Jeffrey, Kenner, LA; Daniel, East Grand Forks; Patricia (George) Pawlik, Eden Prairie; Cecelia (Paul) Eickhof, Crookston; Alice Brunelle, Rogers; Jacqueline (Thomas) Smith, Owatonna; Anthony (Tammy), Covington, LA; Agnes (Ray) Grenier, Crookston; Paul (Shelly) Knott, Red Lake Falls; Joyce (David) Nixon, Greenfield; and Andrew Knott, Red Lake Falls; daughter-in-law Sherry Knott, Red Lake Falls; sister-in-law Joan Schmitz, Red Lake Falls; and brother-in-law Orville (Gen) Knott, Red Lake Falls and sister-in-law Eva (Knott) Lundquist, East Grand Forks.
