Loretta Walz, a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and beloved community member, passed away peacefully on May 2, 2026, at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND, surrounded by her family. Born on December 3, 1944, in Roseau, MN, Loretta’s life was a remarkable testament to dedication, love, and service.
Loretta’s early years were shaped in Greenbush, where she attended Greenbush School and proudly served as a majorette in the band. Demonstrating unwavering determination, she later achieved her GED, reflecting her lifelong commitment to personal growth and learning.
Throughout her life, Loretta embraced a variety of careers and roles with diligence and a kind heart. She worked as a truck driver during potato harvests, a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), home health aide, activities aide, and was employed at Polaris Industries and Northern Pride. Moreover, she was a steadfast helper on the farm and devoted much of her time to being a homemaker.
Known for her good sense of humor, loving and caring nature, patience, and resilience—Loretta touched countless lives. Her infectious laugh and contagious smile could brighten any room, and she was always ready to lend an ear or offer support to her loved ones. Those close to her recall her joyful humming as a reflection of her happiness and contentment.
Loretta’s interests and hobbies were wide-ranging and illustrated a life rich in simple pleasures and heartfelt passions. She enjoyed ice skating, planting gardens, baking bread, buns, cinnamon rolls, and traditional lefse, and held a special place in her heart for animals. An enthusiast of community gatherings, she participated in auction sales, rummage sales, hunting, card games, board games, and reading, creating many joyful memories with her family and friends.
Proud of her deep faith, Loretta led her family in spiritual guidance, attending both Alma and Salem Lutheran Churches. She was an active member of the ladies’ aid and was instrumental in introducing faith into her family, ensuring her children participated in Sunday School, Confirmation classes, Vacation Bible School, Bible Camp, and the Mid-summer picnic. These contributions reflect her devout spirit and commitment to nurturing faith for generations.
Loretta’s family was her greatest joy and accomplishment. She leaves behind her devoted husband of 66 years, Wallace; a treasured dog companion, Opie; and their five daughters: Cindy Sang of Greenbush, MN; Jessica (Shawn) Burkel of Greenbush, MN; Darla Daniels of Oak Island, MN; Lorna (Greg) Hanson of Karlstad, MN; and Amanda Hayes of Drayton, ND. Her legacy continues with numerous grandchildren, Justin (Lacy) Tuziw, Stephen (Krista) Sang, Lisa (Tony Shablow) Sang, Ashley Walz, Alex (Natalie) Gilbertson, Andrew (Rachael Totland) Gilbertson, Kristin Berberich, Nicole (Eric) Swanson, Tucker (Jadyn Johnson) Hanson, Thomas Hanson, Kayla (Matt) Duray, Michael Truscinski, and Alana Truscinski. She was also blessed with 14 great-grandchildren: Levi Tuziw, Conner Tuziw, Eli Shablow, Brinley Sang, Benjiman Flaten, Ian Gilbertson, Ethan Gilbertson, Sophie Berberich, Callie Berberich, Hank Berberich, Macie Counts, Clara Duray, Carter Truscinski, and Phluxx Pokrzywinski. Her siblings Arnold “Barney” Wiskow, Elvina Shimpa, and Lorraine Kvien; sisters-in-law Joanne Martufi and Linda Walz; along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends who hold fond memories of her loving presence.
Loretta was preceded in death by her parents, Dewey and Edna (Peterson) Wiskow; her sons, Laverne and Dewey; siblings Luella, Floyd, Mailen, Eugene “Ole,” Douglas “Duke,” and two infant brothers, Ole and Orville; sister-in-law Arlene; and brother-in-law Dennis.
A visitation will be held on May 8, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Salem Lutheran Church, located at 573 Stephen Avenue in Stephen, MN. The funeral service will follow immediately after, from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at the same location. Burial will follow at Salem Lutheran Church Cemetery.
Loretta Walz’s life was marked by selflessness, boundless love, and unwavering faith. She leaves a lasting imprint on all who knew her, remembered most for her warm laugh, kind heart, and enduring commitment to her family and community. Her spirit will continue to inspire those who were fortunate to share in her life’s journey.
