Obituary

Lowell Earl Harlan Scramstad, of Thief River Falls, Minnesota, passed away on Thursday, July 16, 2026 surrounded by the love of his family. Lowell was born on July 25, 1936, in Como Township, Minnesota, to Henry and Effie Rosella (Ruud) Scramstad.

Lowell was baptized in the Lutheran faith and confirmed at First Lutheran Church in Middle River. He attended Como Country School until the 8th grade and Middle River High School, graduating with the Class of 1954.

A hardworking and dedicated man, Lowell spent much of his life farming and serving his community. Over the years, he worked as a farmer, a welder for Arctic Cat/Tork, and most notably as a United States Postal Service mail carrier for more than 45 years, serving routes in Gatzke, Mentor, Mentor-Erskine, Middle River, and Strathcona. Through his strong work ethic and friendly nature, he became a familiar and trusted presence to countless families throughout the region.

Lowell was blessed to share 57 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Rose (Ellefson) Scramstad. Together they built a loving family that remained the center of his life and his greatest source of pride were his children and grandchildren.

Lowell enjoyed the outdoors and embraced the simple pleasures of rural Minnesota life. He loved trapping, hunting, and fishing, and was an avid fan of the Minnesota Twins, Minnesota Wild, and Minnesota Vikings. He made sure to never miss an episode of Judge Judy. Above all else, he treasured spending time with his family, especially his children and grandchildren.

Faith and service were important parts of Lowell's life. He was a faithful member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church (Thief Lake) and served his community as Treasurer of Como Township for 49 years, a testament to his dedication, integrity, and commitment to those around him.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory his loving wife, Rose Scramstad; daughter, Rachel (Ken) Fredrickson, and their children Brooke(Preston Wenge), Rylie, and Jake; son, Loren (Jennifer) Scramstad, and their children Ethan, Cora, and Casen; brother, Harry (Judy) Scramstad; sisters, Janis (Dwight) Peterson and Jean Ann Johnson; along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.

Lowell was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Effie Scramstad; his father- and mother-in-law, Melvin and Lillian Ellefson; and his nephew, Eric Melby.

Lowell will be remembered for his quiet strength, unwavering work ethic, devotion to family, and the kindness he extended to his neighbors and friends. His legacy lives on through the many lives he touched and the family he loved so deeply.

A celebration of life will be held on Lowell’s birthday at 10:00 AM on Saturday, July 25, 2026 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church of Thief Lake near Middle River, MN with Shawn Wagner officiating.

Visitation will be held on Friday, July 24, 2026 starting at 5:00 PM with a prayer service at 6:30 PM at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls, MN. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to the service on Saturday.
