Lucille Wilhelmina Seeger was born October 2, 1916 to parents Frederick Seeger and Selma (Schaper) Seeger. She was born in Red Lake Falls at the family farm, west of town.
She attended rural school in Red Lake Falls township, the building apparently still stands just south and east of the Wally Seeger farm. Although she suffered from asthma as a child and frequently missed school, we believe that she excelled in spelling and won or participated in some sort of spelling bee beyond her local school.
She married Reuben Harmoning on June 28, 1938 in Red Lake Falls at Bethany Lutheran Church. The story of how she met and came to know Reuben is quite interesting. Lucille's father generously offered some remote buildings about a half mile from their farmstead as living quarters to a family who had lost their homestead in North Dakota during the late 1930s. It is quite interesting that two of Fred Seeger's daughters married two of the sons of the Henry Harmoning family, which temporarily resided, conveniently, just a half mile from the Fred Seeger farm. Her older sister, Elsie, first married Clarence "Bing" Harmoning on December 2nd, 1933, followed by Lucille's marriage to Reuben several years later.
After first residing in Red Lake Falls, Lucille and Reuben moved to a farm south of Brooks, MN. Lucilles continuing struggle with asthma caused them to return to Reuben's childhood home in northwestern North Dakota, Tolley, where his father had homesteaded. Here they prospered and completed their family of four children until cancer claimed the life of Lucille's beloved husband on May 4, 1951. Within the year, Lucille returned to the Red Lake Falls area and continued to raise her four children on a farm east of town in Gervais township.
Lucille's devotion to Reuben was evident in her commitment to raising her four children and immersing them totally in her strong faith commitment to Bethany Lutheran Church, a church that her father-Fred Seeger- helped found in 1931. It would be remiss to not acknowledge the bountiful help of her father and numerous sisters, brothers, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, that provided a strong support network.
In addition to the family farm income, Lucille sought outside employment, primarily with the Red Lake Falls Public Schools and St. John's Hospital. She religiously sought to expose her children to the faith that enabled her to endure her life's hardships and that brought her consolation.
She enjoyed flower gardening, going for a walk outside and babysitting. She enjoyed music and playing the piano, but most of all she loved spending time with family.
