Maida Lois Sjoberg passed away peacefully on Friday, May 29, 2020 at her residence in Naples, Florida, with
her daughter, Julie, at her side. She was healthy up to the end and passed after a short illness. She was
over 99 years old.
Maida was born in Jamestown, ND on December 13th, 1920 to Ruth and Stanley Nicholls. She was the
oldest of six children. She raised and attended school in Ypsilanti, ND. She was a graduate of Valley City
Teacher's College. Her first job out of college was teaching in Middle River, MN. There she met Eugene
Sjoberg. They moved to Minneapolis to work in the war effort. They were married on July 3, 1943. When
World War 2 ended, they moved to Thief River Falls, where they started Sjoberg's, a home, and a family.
After retirement, they moved to Naples, Florida, where Maida was residing at the time of her death.
Maida enjoyed travel, coffee parties and her family. Wherever she went, she made friends. She liked
spending time with the "girls". She was a lifelong reader. She enjoyed all types of needle work and
needlepointing. She was a great cook and entertainer. The neighborhood children would always stop by
when she was baking cookies.
She was always attracted to the water. She spent most of her life living by a river, lake, or a bay. She
would act as a lifeguard for the neighborhood children who would come to her house to swim in the
river on warm summer days.
She left a son, Richard (Holly) Sjoberg of Thief River Falls, her daughter, Julie (Robert) Hanning of Orono,
MN, a daughter-in law Sylvia Sjoberg of Austin, TX, 5 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. She also
left 3 sisters and 1 brother, several nieces, nephews, and cousins to mourn her passing.
She was preceded in death by her husband ("Gene"), her parents, a brother (Fred Nicholls) and her son
(Stanley).
