Obituary

Mark Hagen, 69, of Thief River Falls, MN passed away on Monday, October 16, 2023, with his loving family by his side at Altru Hospital, Grand Forks, ND.

Memorial service for Mark will be held 2:00 PM on Sunday, October 22, 2023 at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls, MN with Reverend Kristin Ostercamp Officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service on Sunday.

Mark Howard Hagen was born December 28, 1953 in Fargo, ND son of the late Howard Oliver and Janet (Berg) Hagen. He was raised in Thief River Falls and was confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church. Mark had very fond memories of spending his summers with his great-grandmother in Pekin, ND as a child. Mark graduated from Lincoln High School in 1972 and he was the president of the senior choir. During the production of "Hello Dolly", Mark was on stage and Cathy was playing the piano in the orchestra pit. This was the event that the two of them connected. During High School he worked summers at Evans Scrap and Steel then worked for Tony Dorn Inc.

On August 21, 1976 Mark was united in marriage to Catherine Ann Barron at Trinity Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls, MN. To this union two sons were born Joshua and Michael. Mark wanted to design and build a log home, Cathy's response was "I don't want to live in a house with a dirt floor!" Mark and Cathy made their home near Thief River Falls, it was a log home and yes it had real floors! Mark worked with his father at Hagen Adjustment and after his father's passing in 1988 he took over the business where he worked until his health forced him to retire in 2019.

Mark's retirement plan was to buy a fishing boat and name it "Claim Denied." One of Mark's favorite places to go was deer camp near Skime. Mark loved life, he had an infectious laugh, he loved telling stories, visiting with friends, hunting, and fishing but his true passion was for his family and especially his grandkids. He had nicknames for all the kids including "Wood tick", "Maynard", and "Willis." Everyone who knew Mark will always remember that any time spent with him would mean great conversation and amazing stories! He always made you feel welcome and was willing to help anyone.

Mark is survived by his loving wife of 47 years Cathy; sons Joshua and Michael, all of Thief River Falls, MN; grandchildren Jaida of Scottsdale, AZ and Ellie and Kail of Thief River Falls, MN; brother David (Sandy) Hagen, nephews Jason (Ginger) Hruby, Tim (Alissa) Hruby, Brian (Mariah) Hruby and many cousins and friends. Mark is preceded in death by his parents and his sister Joan Hruby.
