Marlan Augustine, 91, died on Friday, March 18, 2011 at Thief River Care Center in Thief River Falls, MN.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, March 21, 2011 at Nazareth Lutheran Church in Holt, MN with Rev. Sheila Michaels officiating. Burial will follow at Holt Cemetery in Holt, MN.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM with a 7:00 PM prayer service at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls, MN. Visitation will also be held from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM on Monday at the church.
Marlan John Augustine was born on December 13, 1919 in Thief River Falls, MN son of John P. and Alma (Benitt) Augustine. He was baptized at St. Johns Lutheran Church in Goodhue, MN and confirmed at St. Johns Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls, MN. He attended the Sunny Side School in Holt Township. Marlan graduated from high school from the Crookston AC where he was a member of the cross country team.
Marlan enlisted into service with the United States Army on September 16, 1942. He was a radio repairman stationed in Washington DC and earned the rank of TEC-4. Marlan was Honorably Discharged on March 27, 1946. On December 25, 1942 he was united in marriage to Doris Alida Larson at the home of the bride. In 1946, they came home to farm on the home farm , raising grain and hay for the dairy cows.
Marlan was a member of Nazareth Lutheran Church in Holt and served on the church board for many years. He was a member of the board of directors for Land O Lakes for 25 years from 1958 to 1983. Also, National Milk Producers Federation Board, local Holt Creamery Board, Red River Valley Dairymans Assn., Northwest Dairy Days, Co-op Auditing and Holt 4-H member and leader.
When Marlan and Doris retired, they spent 20 winters at McAllen Mobil Park in McAllen, TX. Marlan was musical, playing trombone in the Holt Band and at the AC, and played the accordion and piano for fun. He loved deer hunting and fishing at Lake of the Woods and Waskish. He enjoyed using his cameras. He saved his graduation money for his 8mm movie camera; later he bought a 35mm camera for his slides.
Survivors include wife, Doris of Thief River Falls; daughter, Barbara (Ronald) Moe of Dalton, MN; sons, Daryl (Paulette) Augustine of Higginsville, MO and Eldon (Marla) Augustine of Thief River Falls, MN; grandchildren, Paul (Cindy) Moe of Ashby, MN, Michele (Philip) Isaacson of Dalton, MN, Eric (Janae) Moe of Dilworth, MN, Derek (Susan) Augustine of Higginsville, MO, Dana (Randy) Shafer of Grain Valley, MO, Matthew (special friend, Trisha Hartung) of Apple Valley, MN, Mark (Miki) Augustine of Newfolden, MN, Holly Augustine of Scottsdale, AZ; great-grandchildren, Andrea & J.P. Moe, Ben & Joe Isaacson, Evelyn & Adam Moe, Kayla, Gracie & Adam Augustine, Brenden & Allison Shafer, Kaydence & Kelby Augustine; sister, Angeline Larson of Thief River Falls, MN; brother and sister-in-law, Milton (Lois) Conklin of Glenwood, MN; aunts, Lydia Berktold of Ellsworth, WI and Elda (Arnold) Augustine of Goodhue, MN; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, friends & neighbors.
He is preceded in death by his parents.
