Marvel Lenora Lian was born August 29, 1929, to Herman Oscar and Ethel Lenora (Johnson) Lian in Bottineau, ND. Her father and mother were working on a threshing crew in ND, and her mother was cooking in a cook car. At three weeks old they moved to Gatzke, MN. She was baptized at Moose River Church and confirmed at Landstad Church, Gatzke, MN. She attended Olafson School, Loven School (District #82), Gatzke School, and Clover Lawn Country School (District #80). Marvel then moved to Minneapolis to work and attend high school at Marshall High School.
Marvel was united in marriage to Raymond Clyde Canfield in SE Minneapolis, October 4, 1947. They lived in Spring Lake Park, MN until 1952 when they moved to SE Minneapolis. She worked as a fry cook and waitress for many years in New Brighton, MN and then worked at Warner Manufacturing Company making interior decorating tools for 17 years. During these years she also raised four children, Dellwin, Linda, Russell, and Larry. In 1980 Marvel and Raymond retired to Long Lake near Aitkin, MN. Raymond died October 15, 1983, and Marvel continued living at Long Lake. Then in 1985 she was reacquainted with an old classmate Arvin Dahl and was united in marriage to him on June 15, 1985, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Aitkin, MN. They made their home near Gatzke on Arvin’s family farm.
Marvel embraced life with enthusiasm and enjoyed many outdoor adventures. She loved snowmobiling, four-wheeling, dancing, camping, and traveling. One of the highlights of her later years was attending Norsk Høstfest in Minot with Arvin, creating cherished memories together. Marvel was a faithful member of United Lutheran Church in Gatzke and was also active in the American Legion Auxiliary.
Above all, Marvel treasured her family. She loved gathering with those she held dear and found great joy in watching her family grow through the generations. Her warm spirit, strength, and enduring faith will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed.
