Marvin Monte Markstrom, 78, died on Monday, April 24, 2006 at his home in Thief River Falls, MN.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, April 29, 2006 at Evangelical Covenant Church in Thief River Falls, MN with Reverend Merrill Kindall and Reverend Wes Langaas officiating. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Thief River Falls, MN.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM with a 7:00 PM prayer service on Friday, April 28, 2006 at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls, MN. Visitation will also be held for one hour prior to the funeral at the church.
Marvin Monte Chester Markstrom was born on October 8, 1927 in Roseau, MN, the son of Peter L. and Bertha (Olson) Markstrom. He was baptized and confirmed at Moe Lutheran Church in Roseau and attended school in Roseau.
Monte enlisted in the United States Army on February 28, 1946 and received training at Fort Bliss, TX. He was stationed in Germany as part of the Occupation Force and was Honorably Discharged on June 30, 1947.
Monte was united in marriage to Vivian Olson on November 4, 1951 in Roseau, MN, where they resided until 1957, at which time he was transferred to Thief River Falls, where they made their home. Monte worked 39 years for the State of Minnesota, with the Minnesota Department of Transportation. He retired as Senior Highway Technician on April 6, 1990.
He enjoyed playing hockey, golf, bowling, coaching and deer hunting. He played hockey with Roseau High School, Roseau Cloverleafs and Thief River Falls Thieves.
Monte was a member of the Abundant Life Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #2793, the American Legion Ecklund-Holmstrom Post # 117, past Athletic Director of the V . F. W. Bantams and a long time Thief River Falls Golf Club Member.
Monte is survived by his wife, Vivian Markstrom of Thief River Falls, MN; two children: Jon Markstrom and his spouse, Dr. Susan Markstrom of Alexandria, MN and Bonnie Aehlert and her spouse, Adam Aehlert of Thief River Falls, MN; six grandchildren: Becky (Jeff) Lannoye of Thief River Falls, MN, Jamie Elleson and Cole Furuseth of Fargo, ND, Kira Aehlert of Thief River Falls, MN, Desire Aehlert of Fargo, ND, Laura Markstrom of Alexandria, MN and Luke Markstrom of Alexandria, MN; two great grandchildren: Damon Furuseth and Nate Furuseth, both Fargo, ND; one brother, Gordon (Pat) Markstrom of Thief River Falls, MN; two sisters: Bernice Stanton of Seatac, WA and Lola Wakaruk of Coon Rapids, MN; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; Peter L. and Bertha Markstrom; brothers: Leonard, Kian and Lawrence; and sisters: Gladys, Irene, Ruby and Lillian.
