Obituary

Marvin Moen, 74, of Thief River Falls, MN died on Sunday, March 21, 2010 at his rural Thief River Falls, MN home.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM, Thursday, March 25, 2010 at Zion Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls, MN with Rev. Rena Peterson officiating.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, 5-8 PM, Johnson Funeral Service, Thief River Falls, MN with a Prayer Service at 5:30 PM. Visitation will also be held for one hour prior to the funeral service at the church on Thursday.

Marvin Clarence Moen was born on October 23, 1935 to Morris and Hanna (Nelson) Moen, in Marsh Grove Township, near Newfolden, MN. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith. He attended school in Newfolden through the 8th grade. He worked on the farm, cutting and supplying wood to the teachers in Newfolden. He also worked at his dads blacksmith shop and gas station in Newfolden. Through his working, he learned there wasnt many things that he didnt know or wouldnt try. He worked at many different farms and his first job away from home was for the Dziengel Farms, near Kennedy, MN.

In his younger years, Marvin enjoyed traveling in the winter months to Florida, working on fishing boats off of the Florida Coast. He also traveled to the west coast and California working on feed lots. For a couple of winters, he helped his uncle paint houses in the Illinois area. He would return to Minnesota in the summers to work on area farms. He worked for the Charles Ellingson Farm.

He was united in marriage to Betty Marie Tanner on October 26, 1963. They spent their first couple of years on the Ellingson farm and then they purchased their current farm in Sanders Township in rural Thief River Falls. Marvin milked cows in the morning, worked for Forsbergs during the day, and eventually he dairy farmed full time. He also raised small grains and corn for many years. He then sold the cows and went to work for Leonard Swansons, Dale Nelsons, Honnecks farm, and Dyrdals farm. The last 10 years before retiring, he worked for Myron Olberg gravel crushing. His retirement job was working for Wayne Staveness custom farming. He enjoyed helping his son Keith at K.M. Transmission. If anyone asked or needed help, Marvin was there. He was a man of many talents.

Marvin enjoyed his cup of coffee. He always carried his own cup with him and had time for some sweets. He loved card playing, dominoes, wood working, yard work and gardening. Marvin enjoyed visiting with people and was the life of the party. He enjoyed watching and feeding the deer with his rye fields. He was a member of Oak Ridge Lutheran Church and served many terms on the council and served as Parish President. He was also a member of the Eagles.

Marvin is survived by his wife of 46 years, Betty, Thief River Falls, MN, two sons Keith (Lona) Moen, Thief River Falls, MN, Cory Moen, Thief River Falls, MN, one grandson Lucas Moen. 4 brothers:, Dale (Linda), Orlando, Florida, Gerald Moen, Newfolden, MN, Richard (Pat) Moen, Newfolden, MN, Dennis (Beverly) Moen, Oklee, MN, 5 sisters: Florence Steffen, Warren, MN, Gwennie (Kenneth) Hjelle, Newfolden, MN, Kathy (Kameron) Harstad, East Grand Forks, MN, Sharon (Kenneth) Braaten, Bagley, MN, Diane (Gerald) Nelson, Newfolden, MN, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother in law Harold Steffen, and sister in law Elona Moen.
