Obituary

Mavis Brekke, 84, died on Tuesday, October 2, 2012 at the Thief River Care Center in Thief River Falls, MN with her loving family by her side. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, October 8, 2012 at Oak Park Lutheran Church, rural Oklee, MN with Rev. Joseph Abrahamson officiating. Burial will follow at Clearwater Cemetery, rural Oklee, MN. Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM with a 7:00 PM prayer service on Sunday, October 7, 2012 at Johnson Funeral Service in Oklee, MN. Visitation will also be held from 9:30 AM until 10:30 AM on Monday at the church. Mavis Evelina Burman was born on November 22, 1927 on the family farm in Equality Township, Red Lake County, MN the daughter of Axel and Bertha (Nelson) Burman. She was baptized and confirmed at Clearwater Lutheran Church in rural Oklee, MN. Mavis attended country school in Equality Township and graduated from Oklee High School in 1946. Mavis went to work in Bemidji, MN as a nurse's aide and later as a waitress in Thief River Falls, MN. On August 23, 1947, Mavis was united in marriage to Arlie Brekke at Clearwater Lutheran Church, rural Oklee, MN. They made their home on a farm next to the Clearwater Lutheran Church where they raised their five children, Randy, Renae, Bobby, Dale and Arlen. Mavis farmed with Arlie small grains, dairy cattle, various farm animals and she put up the nicest hay stacks. Mavis worked a short time for Oklee Manufacturing and went back to school in Thief River Falls and graduated with her LPN degree in 1968. She worked as an LPN at the Fosston Hospital for 30 years until her retirement. The family moved to Fosston, MN in 1968 and spent the winters in Fosston and summers at the family farm. Mavis enjoyed gardening, canning, sewing, flowers, crocheting, embroidering, knitting, and quilting until her failing eyesight kept her from doing the things she loved. She also enjoyed traveling with her husband, Arlie; brother, Marvin and his wife, Ina, and her lady friends. She went to Norway, Alaska, and many other states. Mavis liked to play cards and loved to spend time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was an active member of the Clearwater Lutheran Church where she served as president, secretary, treasurer of the Ladies Aide; and taught Sunday school for many years. Mavis has resided at the Thief River Care Center since December of 2004. She served as the only president of the resident council at the nursing home until resigning last week. Survivors include her loving children, Renae (Jim) Vedbraaten of Thief River Falls; Dale (Shelley) Brekke, Arlen (Deb) Brekke of Oklee, MN; daughter-in-law, Karen (Dave) Rock of Mentor, MN; grandchildren, Sheila Daley, Scott (Heather) Vedbraaten, Shannon (DeAnn) Brekke, Shelly Vedbraaten, Shara (special friend, David Hofstad) Paradis, Troy (Angie) Brekke, Alex (Patti) Brekke, Nicole (William) Kramer, Kelly (fiancé, Betsy Halvorson) Brekke, Kevin (fiancé, Tammy Berry) Brekke, Andrew (Natae) Brekke, Casey (Michelle) Brekke, and Dylan Brekke; great-grandchildren, Collin, Taylor, Nathan, Jessica, Devin, Kylie, Summer, Christopher, Marcus, Ian, Triston, Jaden, Kayden, Presley, Madelyn, Jesse, Peyton, Tahlen, Kenzie, Savannah, Isabella, Brycen, Braxton, Sophia, and Landon; siblings, Marie Weaver and Faith (special friend, Chuck) Lamkin; sister-in-law, Ina Burman; and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, Arlie in 1986; sons, Bobby in 1969 and Randy in 2000; parents; grandson, Jesse Brekke; great-grandsons, Blake Brekke and Rylie Brekke; siblings, Alvin (Marian) Burman, Marvin Burman, Betty Lou Burman, Ethel (Otto) Johnson; brothers-in-law, George Weaver and William Lamkin.
