Mayme Johnson, 89, died on Friday, April 17, 2009 at Villa St. Vincent in Crookston, MN.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 AM, Tuesday, April 21, 2009 at St. Anns Catholic Church in Goodridge, MN with Father John Kleinwachter presiding. Burial will be in St. Bernards Cemetery, Thief River Falls, MN.
Visitation will be Monday 5-8, at Johnson Funeral Service, Thief River Falls, MN with a Prayer Service at 7:00 PM. Visitation will also be held for one hour prior to the Mass on Tuesday.
Mayme Martha Zavoral was born on February 10, 1920 at home in Goodridge, MN to Robert and Mary (Eidelbes) Zavoral. She was baptized in the Catholic faith. She attended District #59 Country School in rural Goodridge.
She worked various domestic jobs in her younger years. Mayme was united in marriage on April 29, 1939 to Clarence Joseph Johnson in Thorholt, MN. They lived in Thorholt, MN for their first couple of years of marriage before moving to Oregon and then moving to Montana. They then moved back to Minnesota and lived in Goodridge. They lived the most of their married life east of Goodridge. Mayme worked several jobs throughout her life. She worked a short time at Sjulestads store in Goodridge and she also wrote the Star News for the Thief River Falls Times. Mayme was a homemaker all of her life caring for the family and the farm. In 2006, due to failing health, Mayme had to leave her homestead and live at Hillcrest Nursing Home in Red Lake Falls and the Villa St. Vincent in Crookston.
Mayme was an active member of St. Anns Catholic Church and Ladies Aid, where she was known as a Social Butterfly. Mayme liked to cook and bake and she canned many jars of sauerkraut. She grew a large garden. She liked to play cards and would often play them into the wee hours of the night. She liked to keep her mind sharp with word search. The radio in her home always played KKAQ radio. She enjoyed the Minnesota Twins and also basketball. She dearly loved each of her grandchildren and took great pride in everything they did. She always made sure the cupboard was stocked with gum, candy, and pop for the grandkids.
Mayme is survived by three children: Robert (Kathy) Johnson, Grasston, MN, Jean Johnson, Thief River Falls, MN, Jimmy (Lois) Johnson, Goodridge, MN, son in law, Merle Naeseth, Goodridge, MN, 15 grandchildren: Michael, Joey, Darrin (Vicky), Roxanne, Denise (Dennis) Schulz, Euclid, MN, Dave Naeseth, Goodridge, MN, JoAnn (Ryan) Myhre, Hermantown, MN, Jason (Kia) Naeseth, Thief River Falls, MN, Jessica (Kasey) Johnson, Thief River Falls, Michelle Johnson, Thief River Falls, MN, Monica (Jared) Swanson, Thief River Falls, MN, Jennifer (Brian) Sargent, Goodridge, MN, Elizabeth Johnson, NE, Katie Jo (Dustin) Marquis, Goodridge, MN, Christine Johnson, Thief River Falls, MN, 14 great grandchildren, 2 sisters: Helen Messerschmidt, International Falls, MN, Bonnie (Swen) Sjulestad, Phoenix, AZ, 2 sisters in law Betty Loiland, Thief River Falls, MN, Ellen Holthusen, Grygla, MN, and many nieces and nephews.
Mayme was preceded in death by her husband Clarence of 57 years in 1996, two daughters Donna Naeseth and Joyce Johnson, one brother Robert Zavoral, one sister Betty Zavoral, and her parents Robert and Mary.
