Mildred Wick, 94, died Thursday, December 24, 2009 at MeritCare Northwest Campus in Thief River Falls, MN.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM Monday, December 28, 2009 at Zion Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls, MN with Rev. Ale Tulu officiating. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Thief River Falls, MN.
Visitation will be held from 2:00 PM until 4:00 PM with a 4:00 PM prayer service on Sunday, December 27, 2009 at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls, MN. Visitation will also be held from 9:30 AM until 10:30 AM on Monday at Zion Lutheran Church.
Mildred Josephine Thompson was born February 10, 1915 in Lee Township near Grygla, MN, the 2nd oldest of 7 children born to Randolph Thompson and Sophie (Hilton) Thompson. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith at Valle Church, Grygla, MN. She attended rural school through the 8th grade and then spent 2 years at North Star College in Warren, MN before transferring to Thief River Falls. Mildred graduated from Lincoln High School in 1933 and then attended Moorhead State College for 2 years and got her teaching certificate.
She taught school at the Gilthvedt School near Moose River and Puposky, MN before her marriage to Matt Wick, June 25, 1937 at the parsonage in Grygla by Reverend S. T. Anderson. They lived in Gatzke, where they operated a restaurant and Mildred taught at the Loven School. In 1947, they returned to Grygla and farmed until they moved to Strandquist and Stephen, MN, where she taught 1st and 2nd grade and her husband was employed in construction.
In 1953, they moved to Thief River Falls, where she has since lived. Mildred taught 1st grade for 15 years in St. Hilaire before retiring in 1975. Through the years she attended summer school and extensive courses from Moorhead State, Bemidji State and Northland College.
Mildred was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls where she was an active member of Lydia Circle, taught Sunday School and Bible School, and sang with the Silvertones . She also was a member of the quilting group for many years. She was a member of Sons of Norway and Rebekah Lodge, the VFW and Legion Auxiliaries. In 1977, she along with a sister and brother went to Norway and visited her Dads birthplace near Stavanger. In 2004, Mildred moved into Valley Home.
Survivors include a son, Robert (Sheila) Wick, Lakeville, MN; a daughter, Marlys (Ed) Furuseth, Warroad, MN; 6 grandchildren, Fonda (Keith) Lillevold, Jason (Rhonda) Furuseth and Chad Furuseth, Allen, Derek and Devin Wick; 4 great grandchildren, Mark Lillevold and Jaret, Tucker and Kerigan Furuseth; sister, Betty Wick, Robinsdale, MN; sister-in-law, Margaret Thompson; brother-in-law, Charles Rustvold; and many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by husband, Matt in 1990; son, Darrell; daughter-in-law, Judy Wick; parents; sisters, Eleanor Thompson, Corinne Haugen and Marion Rustvold; brothers, Richard & Clifford Thompson; brothers-in-law, Connie Haugen, Elmer Wick, Harold Wick, & Arne Wick; and sisters-in-law, Helen Fonnest & Kay Overvold.
