IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Milo James
Windahl
September 13, 1935 – August 19, 2023
Milo James Windahl, 87, of Newfolden, MN, died on Saturday, August 19, 2023, at Altru Hospital, Grand Forks, ND, surrounded by his loving family.
Milo was born on September 13, 1935 to Conrad and Nellie (Lausness) Windahl in Warren, MN. He was raised on his family farm in rural Newfolden, MN. As a boy, he attended Fairview Country School in Marsh Grove Township and worked on the farm with his family.
In 1958, Milo served in the United States Army. Though a back injury led to his medical discharge, he was proud of his service and his commitment to his country remained unwavering throughout his life.
On May 30, 1959, Milo married Darlyne Hallick at Bethesda Lutheran Church, in a loving union that would last a lifetime. Milo and Darlyne quickly started a family of their own. After five years living in Thief River Falls, MN, Milo and Darlyne purchased the family farm from Milo's parents. Together, they raised their family where Milo grew up. Milo and Darlyne continued to farm until retirement. In addition to farming, Milo worked at the American Crystal Sugar plant in Drayton, ND, for 29 years. In 2022, Milo and Darlyne moved to Warren, MN.
Faith was a cornerstone of Milo's life. He was baptized and confirmed at Bethesda Lutheran Church in rural Newfolden, MN. Milo was a lifelong church member of Bethania Free Lutheran Church and later Westaker Free Lutheran Church. His steadfast beliefs were a source of comfort to him in hard times and his faith was an inspiration to his friends and family.
Milo's work on the farm grew into a deep passion that he loved to talk about with anyone who would listen. Even after retirement, Milo could often be found watching television programs about farming or sparking up a conversation about growing conditions. As he grew older, he cherished opportunities to introduce his grandchildren and great-grandchildren to life on the farm.
Milo was known for his ability to talk to just about anyone. He took an interest in other people's lives, never forgot a name or a face, and loved a good story. He will be remembered for his friendly, positive, and kind spirit. He will be missed most for the unconditional love and gentle strength he gave so freely to his family throughout his many years.
Milo's legacy and memory will live on for many generations. Milo is survived by his wife, Darlyne, Warren, MN; daughter, Debra (Garth) Unke, Waconia, MN; daughter-law, Brenda Windahl, Hawley, MN; 3 grand-children: Brittany (Andrew Loewe) Windahl, Katharin (Ryan) Unke Smith, and Joshua (fiancé: Sarah Valoe) Unke; 9 great-grandchildren; cousins; nieces and nephews; and many friends.
