Monica Miramontes-Phelps of Thief River Falls, MN, age 54, died peacefully in her sleep at home on Tuesday, February 17, 2015. A visitation to celebrate Monica's life will be held from 9:30 AM until 11:30 AM on Monday, March 2, 2015 at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls, MN. Monica Gemma Claire Miramontes-Phelps was born on April 4, 1960 in Crookston, MN, the daughter of Benjamin and Delores (Hellum) Miramontes. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Thief River Falls. Monica attended school at St. Bernard's Catholic School, Franklin Middle School, and Lincoln High School. Following high school she attended Northland College - the only woman in her class to receive a degree in Aviation Mechanics in 1980. In 1988 she graduated with a law enforcement degree from NCTC. The following year Monica went on to be certified in law enforcement skills training at Hibbing Technical College. Her last degree was earned at Trinidad College in Trinidad, CO for CNA certification. Throughout the years Monica worked for The Lantern, the Rusty Nail, Putzy's Café, Northland Taxi, Arctic Cat, The Wagon Wheel in Middle River, Marvin Windows, Phillips Iron and Metal, as a home health care aide in Minnesota and Colorado, and for the City of Colorado as the only woman on street maintenance. Monica enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, camping, going to the lake, spending time at the ranch in Trinidad, and riding motorcycle. She moved back to Minnesota from Colorado in 2008 to help raise her two grandchildren. Monica was always there for every member of her family and willing to support or help them in any way she could. The last years of her life were focused on her family - especially her grandchildren. Together they played, spent time outdoors, and had movie night and "girls nights" sleepovers. She cherished every minute spent with them. Monica will be greatly missed and always deep in our hearts. She is survived by her daughter, Tiasha Phelps of Goodridge; brothers Vince (Cathy) Miramontes of Thief River Falls, MN, and Paul Miramontes of Thief River Falls, MN; sister Anita Miramontes of Minnesota and Colorado; grandchildren Anessa and Annaliese Lane; nieces and nephews Chad Johnson of Thief River Falls, MN, Shawn (Andy) Miramontes of Viking, MN, Jennifer (Brad) Herzberg of Thief River Falls, MN, Vince II "Tony" (Allison) Miramontes of Thief River Falls, MN, Benjamin (Briana Vosen) Miramontes of Thief River Falls, MN, Jaime (Ashlee) Miramontes of Viking, MN, Jessica (Jim) Miramontes-Greeley of Andover, MN, Shawn Belland II, Alexander "Gator" Belland, Sarah Ray, and Cody Richardson, all of Colorado; great nieces and great nephews Skye, Emmie, and Katie Rose Miramontes of Terrell, TX, Ian, Ryan, and Aidan Herzberg of Thief River Falls, MN, Vince Miramontes III and Brady Miramontes of Thief River Falls, MN, Kingston Belland of Colorado, Mavrik Miramontes of Viking, MN, Camden Greeley of Andover, MN. She was preceded in death by her parents Bennie and Delores "Dolly" Miramontes; grandson Adam Lane; brother Monti Miramontes; sister DaniLe Miramontes-Johnson; nephew Adam Miramontes.
