Myrtle Waltonen, 94, passed away on Tuesday, January 8, 2013 at Oakland Park Communities in Thief River Falls, MN. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, January 12, 2013 at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls, MN, with Rev. Ben Carlsen and Rev. Mark Helgeland officiating. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery, Thief River Falls, MN. Visitation will be from 5 - 7 PM Friday, January 11, 2013 at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls, with a prayer service at 7:00 PM. Visitation will also be held for one hour prior to the funeral service at the church on Saturday. Myrtle Irene Mosbeck was born October 4, 1918 in Polk Centre Township, Pennington County to Olaf and Louise (Erchinger) Mosbeck. She was baptized and confirmed in the Christian Faith at Black River Lutheran Church, rural Thief River Falls. She attended rural school in the area then graduated from Lincoln High School in Thief River Falls and the New York Hairdressing Academy in Fargo, North Dakota. She worked in Thief River Falls and Hibbing, Minnesota as a hairdresser. She also worked for Elaine's Apparel Shop for a number of years and at Franklin Middle School in Thief River Falls. She was united in marriage to John Waltonen on November 25, 1942 in San Francisco, California. The couple lived in Hibbing, Fergus Falls, and Thief River Falls. She was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, Women of the E.L.C.A., the American Legion Auxiliary, and was a Life Member of the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary. Myrtle had a lifetime love of music and, even as her health declined, found great pleasure in listening to her many CD's and singing hymns. She was always ready for a cup of coffee and conversations with family and friends. Myrtle is survived by one son, Dr. Stuart Waltonen (Lori) of Marshfield, Wisconsin; two grandsons, Michael (Sara)of New Brighton and Robert (Melissa) of Moundsview; one great-grandson, Elliot Waltonen; sisters-in-law, Phyllis Jones, Lavonne Walton, as well as a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, John, who died on July 29, 1994; her parents; brothers, Oscar, Martin, Richard, Samuel, Carl, Vernon, and Raymond Mosbeck; half brothers Charles, Victor, David, Harold, and Walter Mosbeck; sisters Clara Hanson, Agnes Hanson, Florence Pehrsson, Hulda Canfield, Grace Lindblom, Lydia Tommerdahl, and Esther Anderson. The family would like to express special appreciation to Myrtle's niece, Myrna Lane, who was a constant support and guardian angel for Myrtle.
