Neil Richard Carlson was born on June 4, 1941 in Thief River Falls, MN, the son of Clarence and Stella (Stenerson) Carlson. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Trinity Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls. Neil attended Northrup Elementary School, Knox Elementary School, and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1959.
In 1970 Neil enlisted in the National Guard and was honorably discharged after his service.
Upon returning home, Neil worked for several years as a barber in Thief River Falls, MN. He was also a very active athlete – not only did he play sports like hockey and baseball, he also volunteered his time as a coach and umpire. Neil also served as the president of the Eagles Club in Thief River Falls for two terms.
In 1975 Neil was a part of the TRF Fast Pitch Softball Team which played in a tournament in Detroit Lakes. On the way home they were involved in a devastating accident which killed seven of Neil's fellow teammates. After his recovery Neil worked as a janitor at the Elks Club and became well known as the "RadioGram Man," as he faithfully delivered the daily news to area businesses. Along his delivery route, Neil became friends with many business people who became part of his daily life and eventually his greatest support group. On his daily route, he would stop at Johnnie's Café for lunch and visiting, and finally he would end the afternoon with his one beer (pitcher) before heading home.
He was a very witty man with a wonderful sense of humor. Neil always had a smile on his face, which made you wonder what he was up to. He was loved very much and will be missed by all.
Neil is survived by his brother, Glen (Kathleen) Carlson of Fridley, MN; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews; special friend, Putzy (Tim) Raiter of Thief River Falls, MN; and numerous close friends and support people.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A special thank you to everyone at Karlstad Senior Living who treated Neil like a king and even crowned him on Valentine's Day! The care they provided for him was top-notch.
