Obituary

Norma Spong, 72, of Thief River Falls passed away at home in Elk River, MN surrounded by family on September 2, 2014 after a short battle with cancer. Visitation is Saturday, September 13, 2014 at 9 AM followed by funeral services at 10 AM at Trinity Lutheran Church, 325 Horace Ave N, Thief River Falls, MN, with Reverend John Voelker officiating. Norma Louise (Dahlstrom) Spong was born December 21, 1941, in Hillsboro, ND to Ed and Gladys Dahlstrom, the oldest of 4 children. She married Larry Spong in 1965 and spent most of her years in Thief River Falls, MN where they raised their children. Norma worked for the ASC office in North Dakota, Stewart & Walker Inc, Arctic Cat, and for over 25 years for the Engineering Services Department of the City of Thief River Falls performing clerical and secretarial work. Norma grew beautiful flower gardens, was an excellent cook and collector of recipes, was an accomplished photographer, loved her magazines, appreciated beautiful things, embraced her Norwegian and Swedish heritage, and enjoyed traveling. She especially cherished her trips to Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Ireland. Norma is survived by her husband, Larry Spong, of 49 years, son Dr. Richard (Maryanne) Spong of Plymouth, daughters Siri (Jack) Rustad of Zimmerman, and Amy (Matthew) Nordby of Savage, and her beloved grandchildren: Shannon Spong, Ian and Soren Rustad, Makenna and Henry Nordby. Norma is also survived by sister Barbara (Don) Halverson of Battle Lake, brother Glenn (Carol) Dahlstrom of Hillsboro and sister Darlene (Ernie) Melsby of Red Wing. Norma was preceded in death by her parents.
