Norman Baune, of Plummer, MN, passed away on Friday, February 20, 2015, at his home, surrounded by his loving family. Visitation will be held on Monday, February 23, 2015 from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM with a 7:00 PM prayer service at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls, MN. Norman's funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, February 24, 2015 at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls with Pastor Daryl Rothchild officiating. Burial will be held at Oak Creek Cemetery in Bottineau, ND at a later date. Norman Leo Baune was born on April 9, 1928 at Willow City, ND, one of ten children born to Adolph and Othelia "Tillie" (Kariger) Baune. He was baptized in the Catholic faith on April 29, 1928. Norman grew up in the Willow City area, finishing the eighth grade at Notre Dame Academy. At age 16 Norman started his own aggregate business and farmed. On June 29, 1947 Norman was united in marriage to Shirley Froseth in Bottineau. To this union six children were born: Sharon, Robert, Sandra, Byron, James, and Joyce. Norman and Shirley moved their family to the oil fields in Wyoming where he operated a gas plant for six years, later he became a truck driver. In 1966 they purchased the local bowling alley and moved to Plummer, MN. Norman also worked for L.B. Hartz Wholesale until retirement in 1993. While living in Plummer Norman served the community as the city police officer and volunteer firefighter. He also served as mayor for six years. In 1997 Norman and Shirley decided to return to their roots, relocating to Kramer, ND. He was active in the community serving on the city council, fire department, Senior Citizens, and joined Zion Lutheran Church. In 1999 Norman developed cancer of the larynx. After removal of his larynx in 2002, he found purpose in speaking to youth and adults regarding the dangers of smoking. He spoke to many school children and smoking cessation groups, leaving a lasting impact. Norman was honored by the Bottineau County Relay for Life as a cancer survivor. He also did radio ads for First District Health. He also enjoyed golfing, camping, traveling, bowling, and spending time with family. Norman and Shirley returned to Plummer in 2011 to live closer to family. Norman is survived by his wife Shirley of Plummer, MN; children Sharon (Daniel) Seibel of Kramer, ND, Robert Baune of Thief River Falls, MN, Sandra (Michael) Greenwald of Plummer, MN, Byron (Richard Montgomery) Baune of Golden Valley, MN, James (Jan) Baune of Mentor, MN, and Joyce (James) Carlson of Thief River Falls, MN; grandchildren Laura (Jason) Lueder, Derick (Cassie) Seibel, Derin (Louise) Seibel, Kelley Baune, Cheryl (Jeremey) Schiele, Patricia (David) Glennon, Sheena (Adam) Buckhouse, Jenna (Jake) Reese, Seth (Angie) Baune, Jason Carlson, Justin (Kristin) Carlson, and John Carlson; 17 great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents Adolph and Tillie; grandson Keith Robert Baune and 9 siblings.
