Olive Ostby, 89, died on Thursday, May 15, 2008 at Thief River Care Center, Thief River Falls, MN.

Funeral service will be 11:00 AM, Monday, May 19, 2008 at United Lutheran Church in Gatzke, MN with Pastor Katie Koch officiating. Burial will follow in the Moose River Cemetery, Gatzke, MN.

Visitation will be from 5-8 on Sunday, May 18, 2008 at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls, MN with a prayer service at 7:00 PM. Visitation will also be held for one hour prior to the funeral service at the church on Monday.

Olive Bedell Samdahl was born on July 5, 1918 at her grandparents home, John and Severine Akset, in rural Union, ND, the daughter of Otto and Berntine (Akset) Samdahl. She was baptized on September 22, 1918 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Union, ND by Reverend J. T. Langema and confirmed at Highland Lutheran Church, Cavalier County, ND by Reverend J. T. Langema. She attended the Osford #3 Country School in rural Union, ND. She met her future husband while he was on a threshing crew and Olive was united in marriage on October 17, 1938 to Thorfin Philmore Ostby. The couple farmed in Rollis and Eckvoll Township, Marshall Co until moving into the city of Grygla in 1972. She lived in Grygla until July of 2007 when she moved to Greenleaf Assisted Living in Thief River Falls and most recently resided at Thief River Care Center.

Olive was an avid gardener. She always kept a spotless and organized house. She did a lot of embroidering. She was a member of United Lutheran Church in Gatzke. She was independent and kept her yard mowed and driveway shoveled.

Olive is survived by two children Orlin (Mandy) Ostby, Gatzke, MN, Carole Teigland, Waukegan, IL, 13 grandchildren, Shannon (Denise) Ostby, Grygla, MN, Thomas (Denise) Ostby, Roseau, MN, Tammy (Larry) Larson, Roseau, MN, Wendy (Chad Anderson) Ostby, Grygla, MN, Aaron (Samantha) Ostby, Gilbert, AZ, Chad (Autumn) Hayes, Wyoming, Brian (Charlotte) Hayes, Cottage Grove, MN, Eric Ostby, Cottage Grove, MN, Christopher Ostby, Gatzke, MN, Catherine Ostby, Gatzke, MN, Michael (Tammy) Teigland, Waukegan, IL, Mark (Linda) Teigland, Waukegan, IL, Brenda (Peter Gordon) Teigland, Waukegan, IL, 23 great grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren, sister in law Leona McCloud, Langdon, ND, brother and sister in law, Clayton and Marian Ostby, Richfield, MN, and nieces and nephews, special friends Bernice Sistad, Betty Ostby, Carol Klamar, Palmer and Gerodes Holtan, Bert and Gladys Amundson.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1984, parents, one brother Jesse Samdahl, one great granddaughter Amanda Ostby, one son in law Wallace Teigland.
