Obituary

Olive Skappel of Thief River Falls, MN, age 89, died Sunday May 18, 2014 at Sanford Medical Center, Thief River Falls, MN. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, June 10, 2014 at Lancaster Covenant Church in Lancaster, MN. Interment will follow at Bethlehem Cemetery in rural Hallock, MN. A visitation will be held from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM on Tuesday, June 10, 2014 at Lancaster Covenant Church. Olive May (Hoyt) Skappel was born on December 18, 1924 in Minto, ND, the daughter of Fred G. and Mable (Edwards) Hoyt. She attended school in a country school north of Roseau, MN, and in the Roseau Public School. On August 8, 1941 Olive was united in marriage to Joel Skappel at the Assembly of God Church in Roseau, MN, by Rev. Maurice Cory. Olive was a stay at home mom for many years, then worked at Kittson Memorial Hospital as head housekeeper. She later worked as a seamstress at the Arctic Cat sewing plant in Karlstad, MN, until her retirement. Olive enjoyed quilting, sewing, craft painting, embroidery, and caring for her best friend, Katie the cat. Olive belonged to the Lancaster Covenant Church and to the Senior Citizens of Lancaster for many years. Olive is survived by her children: Franklin (Sharon) Skappel of Thief River Falls, MN; Lilly Smolak of Thief River Falls, MN; Gary Skappel of Oberlin, KS; Lila (Dave) Wills of Erlanger, KY; and Doris (Dennis) Wilebski of Lancaster, MN; grandchildren: David (Doreen) Skappel of Grand Forks, ND; Wayne (Monika) Skappel of Flom, MN; Steven (Tammy) Skappel of Roseau, MN; Jason (Amanda) Skappel of Salol, MN; Lori (Santos) Morales of Thornton, CO; and Theresa (Adam) Domingquez; great-grandchildren: Brian, Jarin, Heather, Alyssa, Austen, Cameron, Damom, Nicole, Kelli, Joe, and Carsen; sister: Violet Peterson of Minot, ND. Preceding her in death are her husband, Joel; her parents; son-in-law: Joe Smolak; daughter-in-law: Janice Skappel; brothers: Ora Hoyt and Ray Hoyt; sisters: Florence Hanson and Myrtle Debowey.
