Obituary

Phillip L. Bergland, 78, died Tuesday, June 19, 2012 at Sanford Hospital, Fargo, ND. Memorial services will be held 2:00 p.m., Friday, June 22, 2012 at Zion Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls, MN with Rev. Ale Tulu officiating. Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 21, 2012 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Johnson Funeral Services in Thief River Falls with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. Phillip Lyle Bergland was born on July 27, 1933 to Sam and Mable (Evans) Bergland in Roseau, MN. He grew up in the area and attended Roseau High School, graduating in 1951. He then attended the University of Minnesota School of Agriculture in St. Paul, MN until 1953. Phil then served his country in the US army, stationed in Louisiana, Michigan, and New Jersey. Phil and Lois Roseen were married on June 23, 1956 in Roseau. They began a life of travel and adventure while Phil worked in agriculture in the U.S., Philippines, Honduras, and Kenya. He enjoyed long careers with Production Credit Association (PCA), Agency for International Development (USAID), and Agricultural Conservation and Stabilization (ASCS). While living overseas, they used Thief River Falls as a home base, returning to live here in 1977. Phil is a member of the Masons, where he was a 32nd degree, the Eagles, The American Legion, the Golden Pioneers, and Zion Lutheran Church. He loved living on the farm and tending the yard. He was a news junkie and loved keeping up with politics. The Minnesota Vikings and Twins were also passions. Phil is survived by Lois, his wife of almost 56 years and four children: Lori (Lyle) Olson, Thief River Falls, MN; Becky (Joel) Folger, Grapevine, TX; Danica (Bill) Robson, Thief River Falls, MN; and Jay (Toby) Bergland, Farmington, MN; eight grandchildren: Krist (Stephanie) Olson, Shawn Olson, Kayla Folger, Mandi Folger, Brayden Folger, J.D. Robson, T.J. Bergland,, Carter Bergland and one soon-to-be great grandchild; two brothers: Bob (Helen) Bergland, Glen (Marie) Bergland, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Betty (Morris) Roadfeldt. In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to the Pennington County Humane Society or Zion Lutheran Mission Funds.
