Obituary



Oscar Ray Raymond Haugen was born March 15, 1924, on the family farm in River Falls Township, Pennington County, MN, the son of Oscar and Minnie (Johnson) Haugen. In 1924, he was baptized into the Lutheran Faith in St. Hilaire and on July 18, 1937, he was confirmed at St. Hilaire Lutheran Church. He grew up in St. Hilaire and graduated from high school there, where he played on the basketball team.

On March 25, 1945, Ray was united in marriage to Gladys Hoaas at Salem Lutheran Church near Oklee, MN. They lived in Red Lake Falls, MN and operated the Coast to Coast store. The couple lived for a short time in Pasadena, CA and returned to the family farm in River Falls Township in 1952. Gladys and Raymond purchased a farm in Sanders Township near St. Hilaire, where they lived until 1984. In 1984, they moved to Skylite, where Ray was the caretaker. In 1986, they moved to Riverside Terrace. January 1994, Ray suffered a stroke and moved to the CNC Unit of Northwest Medical Center where he has since resided.

Ray was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church, St. Hilaire, MN and a life member of the NRA. He worked as a carpenter for Prichard Brothers for many years. He worked on the missile silos in North Dakota. He helped build many houses in the area as well as a church in Grafton and helped build the pool at Franklin Middle School in Thief River Falls. He loved making things with his hands, since he was very creative. He made cupboards, bunk beds, wooden trucks and numerous items for his kids and grandkids. He enjoyed deer hunting and cooking of which he was a very good cook.

Survived by son, Gary (Marilyn) Haugen; daughter, Jackie (Mike) Olson, all Thief River Falls, MN, son-in-law, Lyle Hanson, St. Hilaire, MN; eight grandchildren, Shawn, Cindy, Ryan (Erica) Haugen, Kim (Robbi) Peterson, Patric (Amber) Hanson, Aric (Tracy) Hanson, Kristi (Lee) Lilja and Kelly (Shawn) Bugge; nine great-grandchildren, Trevor, Tanner, Tessani, Tristan, Tyler, Kaylee, Taylor, Torie and Tyler; sister, Betty (Bud) Molstad, Thief River Falls, MN; brother, Glen Haugen, Red Lake Falls, MN and many nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by wife, Gladys on May 1, 2000; daughter, Gwen Hanson in 2000; parents and brother, Oliver in 1977.
