Obituary

Family members will meet at Johnson Funeral Service on Tuesday, October 30, 2012 at 9:00 AM, and proceed to St. Bernard's Cemetery for a graveside service. Raymond J. Dougherty was born February 12, 1932, son of the late Leonard S. and Ella (Molstad) Dougherty at Fort Francis Ontario, Canada. Raymond attended St. Bernard's Catholic School in Thief River Falls, MN from Grades 1 through 8 and LaMoure, ND high school graduating in 1950. He received a B.A. in Political Science and History at the University of North Dakota in 1954, graduating one of four with Highest Honors. Raymond was very active in Campus Activities at UND serving as President of the Student Council; four years on the Debate Team; Business Manager of the Dakota Student, the campus newspaper; Vice President of the Newman Club, a Catholic student's organization; and a member of Theta Chi social fraternity. He received many honors, including Phi Beta Kappa, national honorary fraternity; Blue Key, national honorary service fraternity; Phi Alpha Theta, national history honor society; Delta Sigma Rho, honorary forensic fraternity; Phi Eta Sigma, honorary first year student fraternity; and Who's Who. Raymond was selected as a Rhodes Scholar to study for two years at Oxford University in England. He was the first UND student to receive this award since 1939. Upon completion, he was awarded a scholarship to Harvard University where he studied from 1956 to 1959. He received his Law Degree from University of North Dakota in 1970. Raymond moved to St. Paul in the early 1970's, where he resided the remainder of his life. He was a member of the Republican Party of Minnesota and the Republican National Committee. Raymond is survived by his brother, Michael Dougherty, of Lake Mary, FL, and his two sisters, Sharon Erickson of Tampa, FL and Barbara Bergeron of Baudette, MN. Raymond died peacefully in his sleep, Wednesday, September 26, 2012, following years of a disabling illness. Family condolences may be sent to www.johnsonfuneralservice.com
