Obituary

Rema Hanestad Thief River Falls, MN, age 98 died on Saturday, August 17, 2013 at the Thief River Care Center in Thief River Falls, MN. Funeral service will be at 2:00 PM on Friday, August 23, 2013 at the First Baptist Church in Thief River Falls, MN with Pastor Ben Wattenphul officiating. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Thief River Falls, MN. Visitation will be held from 4:00 PM until 6:00 PM on Thursday, April 22, 2013 at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls, MN. Visitation will also be held from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM on Friday at First Baptist Church. Rema Winona Elgin was born July 16, 1915 at Duxby, MN, the daughter of Charles Lewis and Leona Pearl (Dowhower) Elgin. She was baptized at First Baptist Church, Roseau, MN. She grew up and attended school at Badger, MN. On November 22, 1947, Rema was united in marriage to George Harold Hanestad in Grand Forks, ND. They started their married life in Badger, MN where Rema was employed at Badger Restaurant and Sjobergs Mercantile. In 1951 they moved to Thief River Falls, MN where Rema worked at various places including Valley Dairy, J. C. Penney, Hartz Store and Children's Toggery. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Thief River Falls and was a Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday School Teacher and Deaconess. Rema enjoyed crocheting and crafts. Survivors include children, Darrell (Laurie) Rude, Duluth, MN and Warren (Gloria) Hanestad, Thief River Falls, MN; 8 grandchildren, Kyle Rude, Tris Rude and Bret Rude all Duluth, MN, Lita (Clay) Gleason, Baxter, MN, Jana Krause, Plymouth, WI, LeeAnn (Blair) Lund, and Anneke (Joe) Klosterman of Thief River Falls, MN, Troy (Jenny) Hanestad of Anchorage, AK, and 16 great grandchildren; sister, Donna Gustafson; brother-in-law, Carl Gustafason; sister-in-law, Eunice Elgin; and seven nieces, three nephews. She is preceded in death by husband George in 2008; parents; sisters, Eunice Gansauge, Ethel Carlson, and Hazel Stromsmoe; brothers, Herl, Cliff, Wayne, Lewis and an infant brother; sisters-in-law, Vida Petterson, Hazel Dann, Margaret Elgin; brothers-in-law, Carl Carlson, Garlin Stromsmoe, Bud Gansauge and Raymond Hanestad; and nephew, Don Gansauge.
