Obituary

Richard Keith Gilbert, 74, of Thief River Falls, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 30, 2026, at Thief River Care Center in Thief River Falls, surrounded by his loving family.

Richard Keith Gilbert was born on August 21, 1952, in Thief River Falls, Minnesota, the son of George and Myrtle (Lian) Gilbert. He was raised in Thief River Falls and attended Washington Elementary School. When the Falls DAC first opened its doors in Thief River Falls, Richard was among the very first clients to attend, where he formed lasting friendships and enjoyed being an active part of the community.

Although Richard faced the challenges of a developmental disability throughout his life, he was a remarkably independent, strong, and fun-loving individual. He approached life with determination, a positive attitude, and a smile that brightened the lives of those around him. Richard lived with family throughout his life, surrounded by their love, care, and support.

On August 11, 2021, Richard felt blessed to become a resident of Thief River Care Center in Thief River Falls. It quickly became a place he proudly called home. Richard loved living there, and the staff and residents loved him in return. His warm personality, kind heart, and cheerful spirit made him a friend to many. The relationships he built there brought him great happiness and enriched his life in countless ways.

One of Richard's greatest passions was following the Minnesota Twins. He was a devoted fan who faithfully cheered for the Twins throughout his life. Richard amassed an impressive collection of Twins memorabilia and took great pride in supporting his favorite team. One of the highlights of his life was meeting several Minnesota Twins players, memories he treasured and often shared with family and friends.

His faith was an important part of his life. Richard was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls, where he found fellowship and spiritual encouragement. In his younger years, he was also active in Boy Scouts, experiences that helped shape his independence and character.

Family meant everything to Richard. One of the highlights of each year was the family's annual cousins gathering. Richard especially looked forward to seeing everyone together and was honored to offer the dinner prayer before the meal. His words of gratitude reflected the faith that guided his life and the love he had for his family. Richard also loved to sing and was always happy to share a song, bringing smiles and joy to those around him.

Richard treasured the time he spent with his brother, Ron, at Springsteel Resort. The fishing trips, friendships, and celebrations they shared created memories he cherished throughout his life. He looked forward to seeing the many friends he made there and enjoyed celebrating birthdays and special occasions together. Fishing was one of Richard's favorite pastimes, and he seemed to have a special knack for finding the fish. More often than not, Richard could be counted on to outfish his brother, a fact that brought him plenty of good-natured pride and many laughs over the years.

Richard will be remembered for his strength, independence, kindness, and love of life. Whether he was cheering on the Minnesota Twins, singing a favorite song, offering a prayer at a family gathering, spending time with friends at Springsteel Resort, or casting a line into the water alongside his brother, Richard embraced life with joy and enthusiasm. His warm smile, unwavering faith, and gentle spirit touched countless lives. He was deeply loved and will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Richard is survived by his siblings, Marcia Carlson of Duluth, MN, Betty Wachala of Hawley, MN, and Ron Gilbert of Thief River Falls; his aunt, Ruth Gilbert; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews; and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Myrtle Gilbert; brothers-in-law, Milt Rodeghiero and Gary Wachala; and numerous grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Blessed be the memory of Richard Keith Gilbert.
