It is with great respect and heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of Richard "Rick" Korpi, a beloved member of the Thief River Falls community, on February 16, 2026, in Crookston, MN. Born on June 5, 1951, in Thief River Falls, Rick led a life characterized by dedication, humor, and an unyielding connection to his roots, which included his inseparable bond with his brother, Larry. He graduated from Middle River High School in 1969, and throughout his life, he exemplified the values he learned during these formative years.
Rick enjoyed a lifelong career with Burlington Northern Railroad, a testament to his hard work and commitment to his profession. He further served his country with honor in the United States Army, where he was stationed in Vietnam. These experiences shaped him into the man many came to know—very matter of fact with a knack for humor, always ready to share a joke with those around him. His niece and nephews remember growing up with his love of “special” fireworks from Wisconsin on the 4th of July.
Rick was a family man who cherished his relationships with others. He remained close to his family, including his sister-in-law, Audrey Korpi, and his cherished nephews, Larry (Karen) Korpi Jr. and Reed (Kristie) Korpi, along with his precious niece, Sonya (Sonny) Arndt. He was also a proud great-uncle to Sarah (Austin) Farnlof.
Rick is preceded in death by his father and mother, Elmer and Eunice (Ness) Korpi, as well as his brother, Larry Korpi Sr. Their memories will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
A visitation in Rick's honor will take place at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls on February 21, 2026, from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM, followed by a Celebration of Life from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM at the same location. Friends and family are invited to come together and remember the joyful moments shared with Rick.
His legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of his family and friends, who will always remember him not only for his wit and charm but also for the profound impact he had on their lives. Rick Korpi will be dearly missed.
